try a infinity 1260w and a dayton 240 amp that might leave you some for materials.

In a correctly tuned ported design the sub and amp above will stomp the subs you listed.

where are you located? Scouring the used ads, you might find something alright starting with $200 for a DIY is a little low unless you had an amp already, in which case we could find something decent for ya. As cookie said, if we could just work with maybe $400 we would have several options!!!

You could save up but with a little reserch and effort you can build a pretty decent sub out of the stuff above. Its easy for someone to say spend more but some of us have budgets and are trying to squeeze as much as we can out of it.

I did not mean to take anything away from the people who have the crazy sytems with multiple 15 and 18 inch subs. If i could i would do the same and it gives me somthing to look up to and admire. its just that I have been seeking the most bang for my buck after spending too much for my current sub and now realize that if i go diy i can come out with way better performance for my budget.

To the ts you really should google the 1260w and see what is possible.

Running 8 SI 18's but I didn't take any offense to your comment I know the point you were getting across, my suggestion was purely due to the fact that with a little more saving and painful waiting, with a $400 budget the possibilities are much better that we could get a MUCH more capable sub out of it. On the other hand, get the 1260, and the 240 watt plate amp, build out a nice ported box, and then when the next $200 come around, you could build another one if you aren't happy that is basically how i got where I am right now, just found deal after deal after deal until I had made enough off of previous equipment sales to afford what I have. I don't usually purchase unless I have something going out the door. With that said, I have so much overstock in stuff right now it isn't even funny

Funny. DIY can be very cheap. You don't need a 1000 watts or $500 driver to beat a crappy $200 sub.


Low wattage with a big box can be a decent bass for very modest costs.

You will have to do work do under $200 but it is quite doable.

Buy a cheap used plate amp (what do you think is in the BIC?). Some basic HTIB plate amps can be 100 watt. Ebay is your frined. Don't spend more than $50 (you said something about "old sub", maybe that amp).

Learn to model drivers. this is free learn what it all means you probably want to port for output. Start with Dayton Audio DCS305-4 or a pair of SD270A-88.

Find a driver under 90$ that will work. The driver in the $200 sub is worth less than $40.

Use the rest of the money to build the right proper sub you modeled. It won't be pretty unless you are a real carpenter but it is very doable.

Another option is to do some serious shopping for used subs. With a little luck, you might find a damn decent one for dirt cheap that needs a little work.
