As far as the RCs, if you ran them too loud to wear the amp was clipping, it would definitely kill the tweeters on them. But that's true for any speaker. You don't want to run it so loud that the amplifier clarity starts to drop because of distortion.

Satellite size could put you right back in the situation you are in right now.

Moreover, $400 will not replace the RC-Micros. You'd probably be downgrading.

My suggestion would be to start with the front three, and use two of your existing micros for the rear (if 2 still work).

I would rather get a 2.1 system for 400 than satellites.

It depends . . .

* If you were over driving the Micros where they were getting too much clean power, then speakers that can take more power would help.

* If you were clipping the amp, then you could destroy almost anything you put in there if you clip them, too. Tweeters are not going to handle being given heavy distortion. However, people tend to feel that larger speakers have a fuller sound, and you might find some speakers with a higher sensitivity rating that get a little louder for the same amount of amplifier power, and thus maybe you wouldn't run the amp quite to its limits and clip them.

The RM705 has a 2.5" midrange and a 1/2" tweeter.

That's not going to be any better than the RC Micro and I think would be a waste of money.

You should really upgrade to some bookshelf speakers that can handle more power and will sound fuller.

The Cambridge Audio S30 is only 9" tall but has larger and deeper cabinet than the Micros or RM705 plus larger drivers. I think these would be much better for your receiver and room. They come in Dark Oak and Black.

So two pair of the s30 and the s50 center will run you about $640. You said you could spend more than $400 and this would be well worth it.

If you're willing to go larger a couple pair of these Infinity P153 on sale for $49 each would be right in your price range. 4 speakers would cost you $200.

Five of these NHT Superzero 2.0 would be nice too if you still insist on a smaller speaker. Lay one on its side as a center.

Keep your Energy sub until you can afford a much better subwoofer.

Like was said above, if you listen at very loud levels your receiver could be clipping and the distortion will damage any speaker.

I'd say 2 pairs of Pioneer SP-BS22's and a center. Will that receiver work at 6ohms?

It isn't really a matter of speakers but the user, 100w per channel should power most speakers up to a good volume, besides very large hard to drive speakers or something like Mangepans or Martain logan electros.

Do you listen extremely loud? Did you have a sub with your cross-overs set properly? Id say at least 80hz or higher with tiny satellites (80hz would be good with decent book shelves) speaker can play louder with the proper cross-over. Or there could of been an impedance mismatch idk but all of them shouldn't of broke at the same time.

NHT and Onkyo will be fine - However, I prefer the Cambridge Audio speakers over them

Given that you already blew up the Micros, it's a good guess you like to run your system hard. I would not buy speakers that are rated less than your receiver 100 watt rating given that the Micros were also rated at 100 watts. Not unless you plan on being more cautious about running your system as loud as you did before. Speaker recommended wattage ratings are not always accurate (and that's being nice), but if their recommended range is a bit less than 100 watts, do you trust yourself?

The Infinity and Cambridge Audio speakers would be my choice given your situation.

For less than the SZ you could get Infinity Primus P163 - with better dynamic range.

I love my SZs but no way would I recommend them for people who like it loud.

OP, just make sure you have some room for these speakers to breathe. I have found bipolar speakers need a good 2' from all boundary walls. If you get too close to the wall with a bipolar speaker they tend to sound muddy and bloated.
