Really basic attenuator question. Help needed!

This could be the stupidest question I've asked on here yet but here it goes. When I run Audyssey it puts my LCR speakers at -12 so at the suggestion of many people on here I bought 12db attenuators. My question is does the attenuator get plugged into the receiver or the amp? Does it matter which way the signal is going? I'm just not sure where to put the pointy end of the attenuator!!

Here is what I have.....

i dont think it usually matters. because the signal passes through it the same?

Yes, the direction matters... Did they come with a spec sheet?

Normally you (I, anyway) plug them into the amp, then plug the cable from the AVR into the attenuators. That way a large signal is traveling down the cable and is only attenuated right before use.

That's what I did and post Audyssey the LCR are now level calibrated at +1 and not -12. Big difference and sounds a lot better too.
