Center channel/dialog problem. Please help, I'm at my wits end!

If there's an answer to my question on AVSforum, I can't find it... Many thanks in advance for your help!

My previous setup:
PS3
Projector
Sony HT-SS370 HTIB

I was perfectly satisfied with its performance, but the receiver died.

My new setup:
PS3
Projector
Yamaha RX373 (Sony STR-DH520 returned)
Definitive Tech Prosub 800
The old 3/2 speakers from the old Sony HTIB

When playing Blu-ray movies, the dialogue is tinny/thin/distant, especially if there is music/action going on in the scene. I do not have this problem when the source is either Netflix via PS3 or cable tv signal.

I have tried: adjusting the center channel level; switching the PS3 to bitstream; changing the sound fields, changing the surround modes. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

I returned the Sony receiver and set up the Yamaha: I'm having the exact same problem!

If you get the same results with two different AVRs, then we are left with:

Have you run the receiver's room equalization software (YPAO)?
That should help balance the outputs of your speakers -- both their volume levels and their frequency responses.

Also, before you run the calibration, make sure the center speaker is oriented so that it points up (or down) toward where your ears are located in your primary listening position. Most tweeters are directional, so if you're off-axis, they don't sound as good as when you're on-axis. If it's in an "entertainment center", make sure that the center speaker protrudes out from it, not set back in the shelf.

What are your interconnects? (HDMI, optical, digtial coax, etc.)

From what you say, it sound as if the BD player isn't sending a surround data stream. That's either a connectivity issue, or the BD player isn't set up to send the right 5.1 content. Do all the speakers make sound when using BD, just badly? Or are channels missing?

The AVR and speakers can't cause this problem IMO.

It seems that it must be an interfacing issue between the PS3 and the receiver.

I think that it might be that you need to use a component-video connection rather than HDMI between the PS3 and receiver.
