I'm looking for an inexpensive 5.1 receiver for my basement refinish. I'll be installing 80W nominal/160W max in-ceiling speakers. Here are the receivers I'm considering:

  • Denon AVR 1513 $140
  • Denon AVR 1612 $200
  • Denon AVR 1613 $235
  • Onkyo HT-R390 $140
  • Onkyo HT-RC430 $150
  • Onkyo TX-NR414 $180
  • Onkyo HT-RC440 $200

Are the more expensive ones in this list worth the extra money? What are the advantages of a network ready receiver if I have a smart TV? I'm a novice in this arena and in no way an audiophile.

From searching on the forum it seems like the 1612 is a favorite around here.

Thanks for your opinion.

Good luck getting responses. I asked the same question in here a few days ago, and got very limited response. Disappoiting frown.gif

I'm a big Denon fan. I've owned several and have been happy with all of them. I currently have two 15xx and just sold a 19xx.

For the extra money, I'd step up into the 1613. You will get some extra features over the 15xx.

There are a lot of folks around here that are quite happy with their Onkyos, and I think you will get some extra features there. However, for my money, I'll take a little bit of extra quality in the Denon.

I own 2 Denon receivers, and I can't speak to the Onkyos. For the Denon's avoid the 1513 due to lack of Audessy. Here is the main forum discussing the features of the Denon's and what changed from the 1612 ('12 model) to the 1613 ('13 model). Between these two, just pick the feature set that you want. Sound will be the same.

Go for Onkyo for features and Denon 1612 (non-networking) or 1613 (networking) for the better audio quality, dropping the 1513 from the list.
