What are some good options for computer speakers in the $200< range? They don't need to be big as there is not a ton of space. DIY is an option. Will be using with some type of small T amp thinking as of now.

Ones I came across from a quick search -
Audioengine - A2 - Powered Multimeda Speaker System - 199.99
NHT - SuperPower - 90 watt - Powered Speaker - 199.99
NHT - Super Zero 2.0 - Mini Speaker - 99.99
Cambridge Audio - S20 - Bookshelf Speakers - 149.99
Ultralink UCube - 149.99
Boston Acoustics A 23 - 69.99
Boston Acoustics A 25 - 79.99

Why a T-amp? You connect speakers (like the A2) to a line-level or headphone jack on your PC -- the same place you'd connect the T-amp. In this case, however, the amp is inside the speaker.

I have the A2. I liked them enough that I later bought the (original) A5 to use with my TV. I haven't heard any of the others you mentioned, and didn't even compare them with anything other than shelf stock at places like Circuit City and Best Buy. I found the A2 at a local discounter, spent 15 minutes auditioning them, and took my new pair back to the office. Unfortunately, I haven't used them in a year or so. Any review I might make would be from my unreliable memory.

Some consider Audioengine to be an overpriced, boutique brand. Other manufacturers they tend to recommend as being less expensive, better sounding, or both are the small, professional monitors from KRK and Mackie.

I use the Audioengine 2 speakers with my desktop system and just love them.

I also have a small subwoofer connected to them, which cost under $100.

The sub is not needed, really, but small speakers are small speakers, and the sub helps.
