Sub help! Please!!!

Can you help me choose a sub?

1. Your budget. $650
2. Size requirements/limits. none. Plenty of room.
3. Room dimensions. Big man cave. 19x28x9.5. Hardwood floors.
4. Primary uses. Both music and parties. We watch movies often and we also have parties where we listen to all kinds of music from country to rap.
5. Listening habits. I like it loud. I enjoy a good thump and low rumble but also enjoy tight bass.
6. Appearance requirements. No requirement here. I have a huge entertainment center that has a large opening underneath the TV for storage(my wife has baskets of kids toys there now). The storage is open and these baskets sit right on the floor. I plan on putting the sub behind the baskets.
7. Timeframe. Flexible. I would like to get a good buy of course.

Am I crazy to consider this?

With a room that size and people spread about the room for parties you're going to need at least two subs. I'd probably go for a Power Sound XS15 or XV15 and add a second sub when your budget allows. You say your budget is $650 but the sub on ebay is a grand.

For that price I would get 2 of THESE...

Not at all. That sub will blow anything away in the $2K range if you give it enough power. That is a $1k driver alone in the box.

But you need an amp as well, so it might be way over budget. If you can get it for $700-750 would say you got a good deal.

How do you know if the box is well built? I don't want to buy a lemon. I could squeeze a little extra out of my budget if I get a good value.

Or even the correct size...Custom box in the wrong dimensions = poor performance.
However...
If it is done correctly....GOOD DEAL....

Buyer beware...

Yep. Little rock. But going Up there next week.

Well it does have a "make offer" button so I assume he may take less. Also I would ask if he would demo it before buying since it's local pickup. If you decide you need a second sub in that big room you'll have to make your own to match that one. Your call. Ack told you what he thinks it's worth. He knows subs.

He included a thread to read through his build and lots of pics:
http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/sealed-subwoofer-build-projects/57707-sealed-tc-sounds-lms-ultra-5400-18-noob-style.html#axzz2F3qDoKd1

I have not personally seen the sub, nor do I know the builder but it looks really solid to me. If anything he went a little overboard on the bracing but that is not a bad thing smile.gif

The LMS drivers will take a lot of power, and that can get a little pricey. The seller should let you demo it in his room before he sells it to you. I would insist on this for local pickup. As for a used amp, I would checkout Ebay for recently sold crown ce4000 amps to give you an idea. If you buy both, the seller may sweeten the deal.

Something like this should be able to drive it with no problem and is about as cheap as you can get for this kind of power:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Behringer-Stereo-Power-Amplifier/17656014

The LMS is rated:
Power Handling (RMS) 2000 Watts
Power Handling (max) 8,000 Watts

Thanks! I think I am going to offer him $1,000 for both the amp & sub unless one of guys can think of a better option for me. I didn't want to spend that much but this looks like a really good deal for both. Should I go with that? I looked at completed listings for the crown amp used and sale prices varied from $400-$600 with about a $500 average.

From what you could see was the sub box the appropriate size? Any other issues that I should make sure and check for when I pick it up? He said that the entire sub weighed over 200lbs.

Listen to it, bring a movie and some music you are familiar with....and have the seller crank it up. That will tell you what you need to know...
It either performs or it doesn't......

If the cabinet is built right and the driver isn't abused, an LMS Ultra will completely blow away all comers at $1k. The driver alone is worth more than that. It'll perform waaay beyond two entry level subs.

Crazy not to. With it within your driving area a no brainer to go check it out. That's about the best driver out there and sounds like a nice stout cabinet. Just search for DIY LMS 5400 sub builds here in avsforum.com. Careful, you might start drooling.

Plus the seller won't have to pay any eBay fees if you buy it from him directly and onto threw his auction. So it's a win win for him too if you go hear it in person and then buy it.

He has a thread on Hometheater Shack in the classifieds and it looks like you can get this for under $800. I would offer $700 and see if he bites.

Thanks. I think he is talking about $700 for the driver alone. I was going to offer $1,000 for the entire setup. Sub (including enclosure) plus the crown ce4000 amp. I assumed that the amp would be a good buy in the $350-300 range. Or do you think I should just buy the sub and get another amp?

That amp seems fine. You many need to add EQ at some point, but for $1K that would be a killer sub and amp combo.
