budget htpc and media storage

Thread Starter
Plan to build a micro atx htpc with a I3 G530 or similar, SSD to play 1080p, Bluray, won't need 3D. Has anyone turned their single core old pc into media storage server ?

It is an Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939, with gigabit LAN, if I just put a 2TB hard drive in there and install WHS 2011 will that run stream content to the HTPC ok?
Also plan to use one of those homeplug electric internet plugins, or would a wifi adapter be quicker?

Thanks

You can do it but hardware compatibility becomes the issue at some point so you just might as well upgrade to a newer mobo and cpu.. .

You can use what you have..

But when you realize a $33 G540 is faster and uses less energy (much less) you decide you might want to replace it;.

You can get a mobo/cpu/Ram combo for under $100 on current generation platform.

I would say go for it... and upgrade when you feel the time is right. Nothing wrong with getting your feet wet.... It should work
