HTPC sound issues

I have a brand new setup.

And I would appreciate any advice.

This is what I purchased.

Radeon 7850
Panasonic UT50 3d tv.
Sony STRDH520
Core 2 duo.

I want to play games in surround sound however the receiver never shows the dolby symbol it just shows LPCM and if I go into the control panel>sound it shows SONYAMP then I go to properties and change it to 5.1 and it runs the test and everything comes out of the speakers perfectly front l/center/r etc...

My setup is as follows.

1. HDMI cable from 7850 from video card to receiver.
2. HDMI cable from receiver to TV.

Not that complicated.

So why when I play a game that shows the logo Dolby Digital will my receiver not show the dolby digital logo like it does when i m using my ps3 or 360 or sat box?

Thanks.

What games? Unless the game itself encodes audio to dolby or dts it wouldn't with your setup.. Not all games encode the output and these days instead just put out multi channel pcm. You can get dolby digital live and dts connect hardware to force the issue but I don't know why you would want to since high def pcm sounds as good as any encoded stream as far as I know..

Edit: By the way. From the screenshots it looks like you have the audio link working. I don't believe an Nvidia card would necessarily buy you anything audio wise. Unless you are not getting Dolby or DTS when you have specifically set it to do that in a game that supports that functionality I woudn't worry about it.

As long as you're getting 5.1 I wouldn't stress over it.

LPCM has the potential to be much better than dolby digital.

Dolby formats are forms of audio compression. It's kind of like an MP3 designed for surround sound. When connecting via HDMI, Dolby is not what we are striving for, as we now have the bandwidth to not need to compress the signal. LPCM means we are sending raw uncompressed audio digitally from our PC to our Receiver, so essentially we are getting bit perfect audio. It's a good thing, so stop stressing over it,.And you certainly don't need to exchange your card for another one.
