Phono Input reciever

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good receiver with a phono input that doesn't break the bank?

Or should I go with one without it, and just a pre-amp ( I think that's what it is called.)
Pretty much I want to play vinyl through my receiver.

Could you put that in $$. Breaking the bank for you might be different for someone else.

Unless you're considering a higher end AV receiver to begin with, you're probably going to find it much cheaper to buy a seperate phono pre-amp.

These days the outboard preamp is the way to go. AVRs with phono preamps are like hen's teeth.

Most higher end receiver's have a phono pre-amp built in. Yet another reason to get a better AVR. The small things add up.

Make your AVR choice based on the other features/inputs/outputs you need and if it doesn't have a phono input you can simply buy a phono pre-amp for $50 or so.

Well what is a good pre-amp?

That seems like the best idea most likely, because that could grow with my receivers as I grow my home theater system.

First of all what type of TT do you have?? What type of Tonearm?? What cart?? Buying a top end phono is not going to suddenly turn if you have a $399 TT into a high end model. Your working backwards. First look for a quality TT probably in the $800 range followed w/a accurate tracking tonearm preferably at least medium mass in weight. This will give you a larger choice of carts to choose from. At that point choose a phono. Entry level TT's are very nice but limited in what they can do. Basically the TCC TC-750 would be fine at $50 or the NAD PP2 , Rega Phono, Parasound Zphono are a little more but also solid choices.smile.gif

This is the one I was going to go with... http://www.uturnaudio.com

I saw a couple things that said it should one of the biggest bang for the buck products.

If that turns out to be a bust I don't want to spend more then $300 on a TT really.

In that case the TCC-TC750 would be sufficent add a very reliable Shure97xE cart for around $60 and you should have a nice entry level system. A more expensive phono is really not going to improve your sound dramatically. You must consider the source first. Have fun w/the records. Hope you have some good used record shops near by.smile.gif

Actually there is a locally owned shop close to me that prides itself on stuff like vinyls, and harder to find music.

Any recommendations on a cheap lets say sub $150 TT? Just so I can get started.

USB turntables with line level outputs aren't hard to find in the under $150 prices range. These don't need phono pre-amps, they come it built in.

Thinking about buying a older more vintage TT... I see a PL400 on craigslist for $175. Obviously not going to pay that much. What would be a good price?

if i were you i wopuld buy used TT, vintage, you choose the brand: Sansui, Technics, Pioneer, etc.

Can get a good used one for under $250

If you're going to buy used/vintage, you really need to know what to look for. Belt drive or direct drive? 78rpm capable? Motor still steady & reliable?

Assume at least the stylus will need replacing, and if the cartridge is shot it can be a chore to install & align one.

I'm going to stay away from vintage then because I have no clue what I'm looking for, and I'm thinking of going to a 7.2 receiver and just use a phono preamp.

Now just time to decide what TT to start out with.
