remote controlled pc speakers on a budget

Hi all this is my first post. I bought a new tv, its a 55" Lg LM5850. I'd like to use a different set of speakers because the built in speakers really suck! The tvs only audio output is toslink optical and there is no 3.5mm headphone jack. I have a set of nice Logitech pc speakers and I'd like to use these with the tv but there is no way to control the volume from the tv remote.
I can't have a receiver because not only does my budget not allow for it asI'm looking to spend under $150 but also my entertainment unit doesnt really have room for a bulky receiver. This is my entertainment unit http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30218111/
My tv fits perfectly in this unit but the two shelves below the tv space for added electronics are only about 4" in height, probably good for a bluray or game console but not a receiver

I was looking at the Logitech z5500 which are great and have optical input but they are way way over my budget, even for a used set on kijiji or craigs.

So my question is this... do you guys know of any affordable av receivers with toslink input that are under 3.5 to 4" in height? or secondly, do you know of anything like the Creative DDTS-100 5.1 Decoder which utilizes a wireless remote but is not so expensive? I like the idea of the decoder because its small and I can tuck it away in a corner of the entertainment unit.

Hi thanks, yeah that is a little over sized for my space and also over budget.

This is probably a really stupid question but can I just use the bluray or dvd player that comes with a home theater in a box to power my speakers or do I need a receiver?

nevermind it was a really dumb question as these dvd and bluray players dont have audio in do they?

and plug my speakers 3.5mm jack to one of the output jacks on the decoder? This decoder comes with a remote and I believe I can program my harmony to work with i too.
Would I be able to control my speakers volume?
