Finally, Nick! Legend of Korra in Blu! Bring on Aang, too.

I don't know when this happened, but Legend of Korra just became available for preorder (release 5/21/13) in BD on Amazon.

One can only hope they will also bring the original series out on BD, too.

EDIT: See Post #9 -- BD now confirmed for July 16..

Nice find, thanks!

I think the only reason they haven't released the series is because it isn't a guaranteed sale at this point due to the passage of time. If I remember correctly, Netflix has the whole series up in HD so it should be a simple matter of authoring some Blu-Rays at this point.

Count me in for the original series on blu - if it ever comes out.

Korra...my kids have not totally embraced it like they did the Aang series. Or is that Uung according to the movie?tongue.gif

Hopefully, it will grow on us next season.

Well now it's gone from Amazon. My order is still there (and delivery date is the same), but when I click on the product link, it goes to an error page.

WTH, Amazon & Nick?rolleyes.gif

My order has disappeared now too. No notification or anything. Gone, just like the page.

BTW, coati858, nice avatar. Enjoy By is the best! I live in Oceanside, so we are super spoiled with all the amazing craft brews around here.

Thanks. It's funny, my pre-order is still there. I guess they take their time updating these things.

Spoiled is right. I live amongst Green Flash, Ballast Point, AleSmith, Hess and probably a bunch of other nanos.
I don't get to visit them as often as I'd like. Maybe when the kids are old enough to drive me home...

Well now the pre-order is up at Best Buy, with the same release date (5/21/13) that my Amazon pre-order claims is still good.

Blu-Ray Release Now Confirmed for July 16.

Amazon preorder link is alive again (and my order is still active after all that). biggrin.gif

The Legend of Korra will mark the first TV series Nickelodeon has ever released on Blu-ray, and the Blu-ray will contain exclusive special features, including:

Audio Commentaries from series creators, cast and crew for all 12 episodes.
Series creators' Favorite Scenes: Eight Animatics
While there will be select audio commentaries on the DVD, the Blu-ray will be the only release to have commentaries on every single episode.

There will also be an additional special feature that is available on both the DVD and Blu-ray:

The Legend of Puppetbender Present “The Making of a Legend: The Untold Story” (original short)
“The Making of a Legend: The Untold Story” short features a comical look at the Korra characters, in puppet form, as they're interviewed about their adventures.

I watched every episode of Avatar when it originally came out and am a big fan, but dropped cable before Korra came out. Does it compare favorably?

ATLA is my favorite animated series of all time (and I consider it one of the best series of any type to be put on TV), but I enjoyed LoK.
So far we've only seen the first "book" and when they made it they weren't sure if there were going to be any more episodes, so the ending episode feels rushed/compressed.
But some of the new characters are fantastic, and the artwork is great -- better than ATLA and created in HD -- and the overall story is pretty interesting.

The characters start out older, and there are some mishandled relationships that annoy some people. Despite that, I think most people who like ATLA also like LoK, overall.

Looks like I need to place a preorder...

The price jumped up $10, now I am kicking myself for not preordering sooner.

Amazon has the original series' 3 seasons for half off for the rest of the week ... still DVD only, though.

Was that show even produced in high-def? Might not be worth the upgrade if it was SD to begin with.

Yeah, ATLA was created for and in SD, to my knowledge, and I haven't heard anything about major efforts to redo it, so the DVDs may be about as good as the first show is going to get. Pity. At least the DVDs will look better than Netflix ... I hope; and they have all the commentaries and other features you can't access on Netflix online.

The best thing about a BD of ATLA may be the storage space/disc juggling reduction if a whole season was on one disc.

Korra, OTOH, was HD from the very start.

It jumped more than that: It went from $18.99 to $34.99. eek.gif I have no idea what that's about.

Now have our first "in the wild" sighting. Apparently someone jumped the gun on shipping:

Sweet, can't wait for my copy to ship.
My copy arrived and I am watching it now. Forgot about the Zuko's Mom Jab from Tenzin's kids, makes the wait for The Search Part 2 even worse (and there is still a part 3)

PQ is par for the course for animated TV series, pretty similar to FMA Brotherhood. (A little sharper, I need to rewatch FMA as I recently overhauled my picture settings)

So after school, my kids rush out to get the mail, come back with the package, and open it to reveal after all that Amazon sent us the Korra DVD instead of the Blu-Ray. rolleyes.gifmad.gif
post #22 of 26
These are hardly comparable to FMA Brotherhood. FMA is sub HD (so somewhere below 720p), and these are real 1080.

There's a certain amount of aliasing in most scenes, but not terrible. The animation, backgrounds, etc, are all really good, better than I hoped for.
Now the ugly part, is the encode. It uses a AVC encode at 30mbit+, which sounds ideal on paper, but either the master was handled badly (no proper dithering), or they just put zero effort into the encode, thinking high bitrate is enough (I suspect both).
The result is massive omnipresent banding, and even worse: blocky banding (which does suggest a poorer encode).

Still, considering the amount of detail and resolution, buying it on bluray is clearly the way to go if you want to watch it.
I wrote that 10 minutes into the first episode. It may be 1080p native (FMA B was mastered at 540p and put to blu at 1080p) but they did not put a lot of effort into the PQ of this release.

$20 on Blu at WalMart if anyone wants it.
