Is a conversion lens a bad idea?

My Benq 7000 can't fill my screens 96" width because my room is only 13' deep. Would a conversion lens work well? The Benq is the only 3D DLP that will work for me since I can only put it on a rear shelf within the screen vertically. It is only being used for 3D. I only want DLP for 3D due to it's ZERO crosstalk. I use a ceiling mounted JVC for 2d. The JVC can't be shelf mounted because it's depth would block my rear wall speakers.

The issue is cost. A good conversion lens such as the Navitar Screenstar HDSSW065 costs almost as much as the BenQ W7000 does.

Would their 0.8x lens also work in my setup? I see it's a little cheaper than the 0.65.

The W7000 zoomed all the way out gives an image around 85" wide. I would need 96" wide plus a little spillover just to be safe.

Yeah it should still work. All you need to do is figure out the closest throw distance possible for your screen size and multiply by .8 and that's how much closer you can put your projector.

Graig Peer had the .65 in the classifieds for around $1K. I just spoke with him and he said that it recently sold. Every single time I try to buy a projector on this form I'm always too late. I feel like crying.frown.gif

Another possibility is to fire the pj sideways and reflect it off of a first-surface mirror.

The image would be about 12" wide at a point that would add the requisite throw distance, so the mirror would need to 1.414 x 12 = 17" wide, and 7" tall.

I might have one close to that size from a RP project I bailed on; PM me if interested and I'll see if I can find it.

He's just talking about putting the projector off to one side and pointing it at a mirror.
Here's a super-crude drawing that I whipped up in 30 seconds to illustrate.

This approach is probably about 10x cheaper than going with a lens and much less likely to have distortion since a flat mirror is a lot easier to make than a distortion-free lens.

Where could one obtain a mountable mirror at 45 degrees (like depicted)? Do people get their protractor out and measure for themselves and glue one piece of mirror at the appropriate angle to the wall?

The mirror would require stable mounting to the wall or a stand, same as the pj.

Mysteries such as where to procure such an arcane device can be solved by targeted application of internet search technologies

It was expensive, but boy that .8 Navitar is a heck of a lens. I see zero reduction in any picture category with it in place. Now I can have the 7000 fill my entire scope screen for 3D and animation 2D. Probably the best thing about it is ease of placement. I can easily switch it to use on my 2D JVC projector. I use constant height zoom with a 2.4:1 screen. Now with the Navitar, I can zoom the JVC out enough to move to a 2.77 ish scope screen for films like Ben Hur. Even 2.81 for How the West Was Won could work. This would eliminate all horizontal black bars leaving just side bars to mask..

By the way, the size and weight of this thing was shocking. If ever a lens looked like it is worth over 1k, this is it.
