Home Theater in Living Room: Speaker Types and Placement

This is my first thread (of many to come) for seeking advice for turning my living room into a 5.1 entertainment/theater room. I just moved into a house that is not prewired for A/V. I don't have the exact measurements yet, but my living room is more long than squared and has 3 sides. I plan to mount a 70" or 80" LED TV on one of the long walls. The other facing long wall actually has windows to the backyard, and the 3rd side (short wall) has a fireplace. (And I don't want the TV over the fireplace, so I'm stuck with this one layout). Of course, the 4th side opens up to the dining kitchen area.

First question is would it be better to mount the front and back speakers up onto the wall? If so, how high up for fronts and rears? Or should I buy floor standing speakers? Which would provide "better" experience?

Where can find a calculator to determining the optimal speaker placement distances for the room size and layout I have?

Also, how far part should the front speakers be? And the rears?

I also want to run the speaker wires behind the baseboard trim, and then when the wires reach the speaker locations, run it straight up behind the drywall (if the speakers are mounted on the wall). I saw some tutorials on running wire behind the trim. One shows installing a wiretrack behind the trim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfUztCOroY0). Another shows just running the raw wires behind the trim through the studs. Which method is better? Any disadvantages in these methods?

Any other options that you guys here prefer?
