But it's become something of a cult favorite over the years with a very dedicated fanbase that still regularly plays it. I just repurchased it for my new PC. Still an outstanding game. You'll have to forgive some of its storytelling clumsiness, though. But the mechanics and level design are unmatched this generation IMO. Learning the skills in this game is just the beginning. It's when you start learning to combine those skills and put them to new uses that it really becomes something special. That's why the time trials are so good. They force you to rethink what you know and what's possible with the skill set.

And for me, as a physically active person with a technical mind, I've never experienced a game that so convincingly reflects the feeling of learning a complete physical discipline.

Well it does sound like a good game and should be some fun in a few days.

Another one I really never paid attention to was the Max Payne series. Reading another thread like this (I believe) had me rethink it and I grabbed 3 and had a good time with that game. To be honest I still do not think I played it the way it was meant to be played since I am used to being in “cover” and I think that game does not you to be there long; I think that will make sense to the folks who have played it.

Depends on the difficulty level you play. On the harder settings, one or two shots, and you're toast. So you need to combine cover with slow-mo dives to survive on those higher settings. Such a great game.

The good:

Fallout 3. Enough said.

Bioshocks. Brilliance in a plasmid bottle.

Left 4 Deads. Best. Shooter. Ever.

Uncharteds. Pushed the envelope for everyone.

Heavy Rain. Daring to be different pays off.

Borderlands. Just plain fun.

Mass Effect. 99.9% greatness, nearly ruined by the 0.01% shyte ending.

Dead Space 1 was a mind blowing experience. DS2, not so much. DS3 is busted by co-op.

God of Wars. Hack. Slash. Joy.

Orcs Must Die. Best. DLC. Ever.

Battlefield Bad Company 2. Too bad BF3 ruined teamwork by making everyone give a crap about their silly-ass KDR.

Oblivion/Skyrim. Most. Hours. Ever.

Journey, Flower, Flow, Unfinished Swan, Limbo, etc. Genius. Pure genius.

The bad:

Greed. Watching developers slit their own wrists in front of us and the ensuing vampiric feeding frenzy is mind boggling.

The "Huh?" factor:

Halo, CoD, GoW, and every other overblown, over-rated, over-hyped, pathetically average-in-every-way game out there that sucks the money out of consumer wallets each and every year with little more than a new map or two and ever-so-slightly better graphics. How they do it is beyond me, but it works. Just like guilt-ridden parents willing to get raped over Skylander toys, "reality" based TV, and all junky devices with an "i" in front of them pricing, these games' popularity elude me completely.

The great for me, nasty for most:

360 RRoD and PS3 YLOD consoles. Made me boatloads of dollars. Cost most their sanity and patience.

The beyond stupid:

Gamertags with "420" in them.

The best thing of this gen was the Rock Band franchise, hands down. It was new and innovative with full band support, engaging, and will only now be ending weekly DLC release in April after 275 weeks in a row. I don't know how you can argue with that. smile.gif

OK, so a little late to the phaaarteeeh, but here are my picks:

* ALL the COD games

* ALL the Dead Space games

* ALL the GOW games

* ALL the ME games

* And of course, ALL the Forza Motorsport games!

Other honorable mentions:

RDR, AW, Bioshock, Fight Night, mehhh... not too many now that I think about it. Maybe I'm losing interest in games generally, because just about the only games that seem to attract me now are either shooters or driving sims smile.gif

Do you mean GOW or GOW?

He's a total PS3 fanboi so he's talking GOW.
post #39 of 40
He did say ALL the GOW games so maybe he means all of them?

OK, laymen. I'll say it again:

ALL GEARS OF WAR GAMES... and I'm NOT a PS fan boy. Ditched it the day I purchased FM2 and an X360. wink.gif
