Projector Dilema *Please Help*

Ok right now i have a old Mitsubishi HC1500 720p projector which we have loved. The kids use it mostly to play games on the XBOX 360 and the rest is used for watching Blu-Ray movies. The third bulb has now went and i am on the fence whether to buy a new projector or not. It is now making a real loud whine which is slowly getting louder. I'm in fear the color wheel is going.

Now i know my current projector is DLP

1. Should i stay with DLP? (Just not sure if switching to an LCD PJ is going to be a lot different)

2. I need a PJ that has lower input lag for gaming.

3. My budget is $1800

**3D does not interest me**


I will be projecting from 13 ft away in a completely light controlled room. I do want a PJ that is bright enough for watching sports every now and then with recessed lighting up a tad. My screen size is 106 inches on a wall painted with the Black Widow mix. Placement of PJ is currently on a shelf 7.5ft high just below the ceiling.

In my price range the only PJ that has caught my eye is the Epson 8350. Are there any other suggestions anyone has based on the info i have given?

I need a PJ pronto. I've been 5 days without and it's killing me. Any help would be greatly apppreciated

You have the HC1500 on a shelf 7.5' high? Is it upside down? If not, you must be using mucho keystone. Bad.

If you're keeping that shelf mount, the Epson 8350 is a good choice. You need vertical lens shift.

Perhaps if you can hold off until the later this summer when some of the projector companies release some LED 1080P projectors hopefully confused.gif at a price range all of us can afford.

The whining noise that you hear is a good indication that the color wheel is going bad.

Maybe if you can wait a good stop gap projector that might hold you over until later this summer is the LGPA70G.

Yes, you may have heard of some problems with the focus with this projector but hopefully LG's QC center has fixed the problem and that later build units are coming from the factory with no focus issues.

If you can wait for FRYS to put the LGPA70G on sale for $ 399 you have a half way decent projector for the cost of a new bulb for your old projector.

Besides once you get another projector the LGPA70G projector can be a 2nd back up projector.

If you can hold off a little longer that would give you time to save up for something even better later this summer.

Yes it is upside down lol. I made some padding that it fits perfect in upside down.

Not sure if i can hold out until this summer for a PJ. I kind of need one now. I wish i could. I loved my Mitsubishi HC1500 even if it was only 720p and was great for gaming. There has to be something comparible or a step up in the $1800 price range. I have just been out of the PJ loop just not sure what my best bet would be.

Projector newbie here but I have a similar setup with a ~13ft throw, not a giant screen, I want decently low input lag but have no desire for 3D. However I do not have a bat cave so super blacks are lost on me. I decided on a refurb Epson 8350 from VA. I will let you know how it turns out smile.gif.

The Panny PT AR 100 seems like at least a "must consider" for you, AFAIC.

It was on my list as well but reviews ranked it as relatively loud compared to the Epson. That might not matter in the op's case.

HC3000 owner .. If I were you I would not even consider non DLP. Stay with Mitsubishi, at least that is my plan when I must upgrade some day..

Yeah but I also use it for gaming and like the low Input lag with the Epson 8350. I know it will be different switching from DLP to LCD but maybe id like it just not sure.

I have a Mits HD1000 (which I believe is rather similar to your HC1500). For me, the HC4000 is the most likely upgrade as the HC4000 is similar in size and weight, and projection geometry (offset, throw ratio). Perhaps a good choice for you as well...

The HC4000 is better, it's DLP. wink.gif BUT with your shelf height, you really need lens shift. The Benq W1070 may work. You can check in that thread.

I have been holding out because I can't afford it now because of the realities of life.
I have to get my car fixed and hopefully soon it will be working as I want to be.
Got electrical problems with the car and it needed a new Catalytic converter.
It also needs new struts.
After all that is done then hopefully I can start saving for a LGPA70G unless one of those new 1080P LED projectors come down in price.
If I do buy a new projector I don't want to be burdened with replacing a bulb every few years so I am going with LED.

I have the Epson 8350 and enjoying gaming on it and my 106" screen setup like yourself. I keep it about 12 feet back form the screen on Eco mode and haven't really had a problem with it for my movies, PS3 or Xbox360. Panning in the movies is ok but wish it were a tiny bit smoother for some scenes, but no problems game wise. Colours seem great and the customer service is top notch for any problems you might run into, which some have come into but nothing for me so far *knocks on wood* and am coming 1 month away form my 2 years of use.

Well I'm glad someone responded about the Epson 8350 I can get an Open Box one which I'm not to sure about for 1,032. But it is an Open Box whichs makes me uncomfortable to buy. Or can just buy new for 1,299. Now I get a few DLP owners saying I should stick with DLP because that's what I use now but I am on the fence to making the switch to the 8350 because of flexibility of placement and low Input Lag for gaming.

Now my choices are the Mitsubishi HC1500 or Epson 8350

Help me decide.

I have an HD1000 that has been retired, and and 8350. The 8350 has the 'LCD' look compared to the Mits having the 'ultra sharp DLP look'. As others have noted, if you're a fan of the DLP look then you would probably be happier with the HC4000. There's relatively new BenQ, the W1070 that fits your budget. I haven't seen it, so I can't comment. I've been quite happy with my 8350, and haven't experienced any issues.

Consider the BenQ W1070 for about $1,000, it even includes 3D for 3D gaming. Its a DLP, see the site on this forum.

Also I'm leaning towards the Epson 8350 because my projector is 80% used for gaming on the XBOX and from what I vet from reading the 8350 has 1 of the lowest input lag times. Is that right?

Now I can get a Open Box Epson 8350 for $900 at Best Buy with one year warranty from Epson and for $159 more add a 4 year extended warranty thru Best Buy. Should I pull the trigger. $1059 with extended 4 year warranty doesn't seem to shabby.

Hey with the 8350 do you have to mount upside down from ceiling? Is that ideal. Or can I put it right side up on a shelf just below the ceiling?

The 8350 has tons of shift but if you place it at the ceiling it will probably still need to be upside down otherwise at best your viewers will be looking up too high. Check out the manual it is pretty clear about adjustment range.
