Gorilla Glue or PL Premium for installing threaded insert?

Hey guys, just looking for some advice from some of you who are more experienced with DIY speaker building/fixing.

One of the threaded inserts on one of my speakers was stripped so I had to take it out and am now about to be re-installing a new one. Since I have un-screwed the original, the fit when screwing in the new one isn't as tight and spins a little instead of locking in place.

I have already bought some 'Gorilla Glue' and also a tube of 'PL Premium Fast-Grab' -- I am just debating which to use and how to use it. Which would be better for bonding the die-cast zinc inserts to the MDF of the speaker cabinet to ensure it won't spin or pull out? I'm guessing it won't take much to hold it in place but I'm no expert.

One thing I was wondering about -- is it possible for either of these products to wick/soak into the MDF and damage the MDF/cabinet? Also, feel free to include any tips/pointers on the process if there is any potential for a novice to mess this up as they are extremely expensive speakers.

Thanks.

*Edit - Would using epoxy be a better idea?

Any of those adhesives should work OK. I have used epoxy and PL in the past, and I'm planning to use gorilla glue this weekend.
Be sure to degrease the inserts before you try to glue them, and be sure to chase the threads with a tap once it is installed.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. Just one question, when you say chase the threads with a tap what exactly does that mean? I think I have a vague idea but not certain.

a tap from a set like this : It will get out anything than may have gotten stuck in the threads

+1, what N8 said.

I would use anchors instead of threaded inserts and save yourself a lot of potential hassles.

Yes, and use a slow set, not 5 minute stuff. Assume that it will get in the threads, requiring that you tap it to clear them, so drill a hole the size of the tap deep enough past where the insert reaches to allow the tap to pass fully into the insert.

The hole is already drilled this was a factory insert on the bottom of the speaker for securing it to the stands. I stripped it so I just took the stripped one out and will be screwing another (new) one in -- don't really want to get into using something completely different or drill any holes that weren't there from the factory.

Any particular reason you'd recommend epoxy over poly adhesive? Would J-B Weld do the trick?

I actually don't even know if I really need to use any epoxy/glue to be honest... I can screw it to the stand fine without having any adhesive, the only thing that makes me want to put some adhesives in there is if I decide to move the speaker while it's still attached to the stand (putting shearing pressure on the insert). Basically peace of mind hehe. I guess I could just make a point to never move the speaker/stand while they are still attached to one another...

What would you guys do? smile.gif

The poly doesn't stick to metal well. The epoxy does. You can try it without and it may work just fine but the first time one of them spins out, you'll wish you used the epoxy.
