Monitor Audio MASS Subwoofer - Signal Delay before Bass response from Subwoofer

Hi all,

I recently purchased the Mass 10 system which comes with the Mass W200 Subwoofer.

I have coupled this with a Denon 1513 AV Receiver and the setup seems to be working well.

I just have one problem - After a period of silence or bass-less music like pure guitar, high piano notes etc, my subwoofer takes a second or so to detect bass notes coming in. It misses the first one or two bass beats, and then works perfectly afterwards. Is this normal?

So basically for example if there is silence, and then bass notes start coming in, the subwoofer activates only after the first beat or so has passed.

I have tried various things - I have set the subwoofer switch to "Always On" instead of "Auto On" etc, tried to increase signal strength to the sub-woofer, tried to up the crossover frequency to 120Hz but I am facing the same problem.

Any comments or suggestions? Would be much appreciated!

Hi,

Sometimes passages of music with low output from the amp will cause the sub to go into sleep. The output is already at a low level and the sub will switch in at around 100mv. However this is quite low output and will generally be unreliable in some cases with material other than movies. This will be the case with most, if not all subs. I would recommend using the trigger input to switch. The w200 comes with a trigger lead. This will be completely reliable way of switching on and off as it will be synced to the AVR. When you switch the AVR on or off, then the W200 will also. Good luck

Thanks Dean,

This may just make sense - this problem has been driving me crazy.

I thought the sole purpose of the 12V trigger was to switch the sub on or off with the AVR. I didn't know that it could prevent the sub from going to sleep when the AVR is on.

Just one more question - unfortunately I do not have a 12V trigger output from the AVR. Can I just get a wall plug type 12V output adapter with a 3.5mm jack and then plug it into my sub? That should work correct?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi,

Ah, it seems you have chosen one of the very few AVR's on the market that doesn't have a 12v trigger output. Your suggestion in theory would work, however it's not something I've tried. Besides that, you would still have to switch the power supply on and off. I wouldn't recomend it to be honest, but I guess you could try it. You would need to make sure the polarity is correct.

You could also try connecting the W200 using two stereo cables, if you have a spare set of phono RCA leads. It might be worth a try as well. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest. Normally using the trigger input solves all issues like this.

I have the exact same problem on my MASS sub.

All,

Thanks so much for your inputs! I tried Dean's second suggestion and it works!

All you have to do is get a Y Splitter and split the LFE output from the Amp and connect it to the two phono inputs on the sub.

Works perfectly, and bass performs like it should!

hi, well i tried that too,and it works, but for me thats not the solution, because its not the same thing because when you connect trough the stereo input in the sub the av receiver no longer controles the sub frequency its all done by the sub, and for me the a sub for home cinema has to be connected trough the lfe input.

I im allready in the second sub and it has the same issue, im waiting for a response from monitor audio regarding this, if they dont give a solution, in tis case a sub working correctly trough the lfe input, i have no other way than to return the all package and try a diferent 5.1 pack or other brand.
