ONKYO TX-NR616, Audio Return Channel not working properly

I recently purchased one of these receivers and have the following problem.

Despite setting all the menus as the instructions say I do not receive any audio over the Audio Return Channel. The receiver recognizes that it is receiving the ARC signal, the TV recognizes that the receiver has been turned on and disconnects the internal TV speakers, however i still get no audio.

I have read that any HDMI cable is capable of supporting ARC and i don't want to waste money upgrading cable if this isn't necessary.

Does anyone have any ideas?

ARC does not require a special cable. It must be supported by the inputs on both devices and CEC must be enabled on both. ARC can be flaky. If you can't get it working, why not try an optical cable?

Maybe optical may be better option.

My Sony Bravia definitely supports it and it is turned on, but it just doesn't work, was trying to prevent having to use optical as my ps3 and blu-ray player are already using the optical ports on my amp.

A final step once HDMI-CEC is enabled on both the TV and the AVR is to turn both devices off, then power on the TV, pause, and power on the AVR.

Have tried powering off and on.....and in the order as described, but still nothing. Even done the latest firmware update (which can only be done via usb stick).

I emailed Onkyo European support on 6th of Feb, but as yet no response.

If you don't turn on the RIHD it will not work
Go to setup scroll down to Hardware setup choose HDMI then HDMI control(RIHD) turn it on
then it will work
