Does lens shift reduce image quality, luminosity, etc?

I'm going to be mounting my Panasonic PT-AE8000U soon and wanted to know if lens shift will be adequate to compensate for a max of 16" offset. According to the manual, I could go pretty far off center, but I'm concerned that illumination would be uneven, or quality would somehow drop. Does anyone know about lens shift and if image quality is retained?

I could install a 2x4 between the beams for mounting the lens center dead, but want to know if that's even necessary.

If you can possibly install it centered on the screen then you should do it. The image quality and brightness do degrade as you move off the center of the lens. Lenses are always sharpest at the center.

This is why you see still photos that have vignetting in the corners and out-of-focus edges.

Let me suggest not much. Moving it 10% or so is not going to cause a visible change, I wouldn't want to move it to the limits.

Yeah I think at most it would be off by 8" since it's 16" OC beams. Considering the screen is 106" diagonal, I think I'll be alright... I guess i can just try it first before mounting

Depends on the lens shift method used by the manufacturer.
