Benq W1070 alternatives with longer throw and close to 0% lens shift?

Hi, I am looking to upgrade my SD projector and came across the W1070. It sounds perfect for me, except it's throw is just too short for my room.

I like DLP, and I need to be able to project a 92" wide (105" diag) image from 15 feet with the image top as close to lens center as possible. I will use it ceiling mounted in my living room about five feet above my head. I will use it almost always for BD/DVD at night with minimal light but daytime blinds-down usability would be nice too.

I'm ambivalent about 3D, and don't care at all about speakers, multiple inputs or lens shift.

Is there anything with similar performance and price to the W1070 that has a longer throw that will work in my setup? If not, what would be the next more expensive projector while keeping the DLP 2D brightness and punch of the W1070?

I'm in the same boat, everything about the W1070 sounds great but after running the numbers through a view distance calculator it just doesn't look like it's going to work for my room/seating arrangement without having to place the projector in front of my couch, which I want to avoid.

I sit around 12 feet away from where the screen will be and even with the projector right overhead and the lens zoomed all the way out I'm looking at no smaller than a 120" screen. I'm OK with 120" but would like to have a little bit of margin for error and the option to place the projector somewhere around 15' away like you mentioned.

Seems strange to me that the W1070 has a short throw and then they introduced an even shorter throw version of the same projector.. wish there was the option for a longer throw version of this projector for those of us with longer rooms/seating distances.

Well nothing in this exact price range I know of because the cheaper Acer and soon Optoma 3D projectors that are under $1000 are also short-throw.

However, for a couple hundred more: there is the Acer h9500bd, or the Optoma hd33.

I'd guess that since this is targeted as a low-end home theatre projector that many people do not have huge rooms in their houses. Many houses probably do not have a single room that is 20' in both length and width (and if you want to project onto the longer wall, the shorter dimension would limit your image size from the projector). I'd think there would be more issues with not being able to get as large a picture as someone wants, particularly if they were trying to throw an image onto the longer wall of a rectangular room -- but I might be incorrect in my assumption.




at 12', the W1070 can project between 110"-143"
The epson projectors (yes they're LCD and I realize you said you like DLP) would be an option for what you want, They have a slightly longer throw but they also have a much larger throw range (double! as you can see comparing 12' W1070 to 17'4" epson 3020 - W1070 allows 33" from 110 to 143 while the epson allows 68" from 110 to 178) because they offer more zoom control.

at 12', you get 77-124 (with the 3020, the other epson projectors are fairly similar)
And, at 17'4" back, you could project 110"-178"


I reread the first post and saw that OP was specifically asking about DLP ass the only option, so some of my comments were not applicable. My mistake.

wow. The H9500 is going for this cheap now. This is a nice high contrast projector with good blacks. Acer just needs to re-tune this projector with better colors and add faster color wheels like the W1070.

I guess what I'll probably end up waiting for is a newer revision of the H9500 or one of the other competitors that has picture quality comparable to the W1070 but with a longer throw.

Is there a replacement for the Optoma HD33 in the works? It looks like the HD33 would fit my room well (finished basement that is long and narrow) allowing me to project the screen size I want from around 14-15' away, but I like that the W1070 is newer and apparently has better PQ.

Hopefully something like that or a newer 2013 model from a different company will come out this year and suit my needs.

Wait for Benq W1400/ W1500 coming out shortly. It's a nicer version of W1070 with longer throw and FI.

It's looking like I'll end up needing to spend closer to $2,000 for a "home theater" projector with better contrast/longer throw for my basement instead of $1,000 for one of the brighter, louder, short throw "home video" projectors.

The research continues..

I believe W1400 is going for around $1400. W1500 is more expensive with wireless HDMI.

im seeing that you can get it down to 110" from 12'. zoom at 1.0

OP, I came across this deal on Newegg for a $1,300 Mitsubishi HC7800D that can accomodate much longer throw distances than the W1070: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824248147

I'm taking a serious look at this and trying to figure out if I can make the W1070 work in my room or if I should just go for the extra flexibility offered by that HC7800D.
