Hey guys I have a question about projectors..

I need to project an image pretty brightly onto outdoor walls. The bigger the better..I will be doing it at night obviously, at different locations that are highly visible to people. I looked into renting a 20K lumens projector but it's liek 800 a day..Not trying to spend that much. How bright do I really need for a pretty big bright picture on a wall? This has to be portable as well..Any suggestions?

I would go with a business class projector because they are generally brighter than the home theater models. Look for a projector that has at least a 300 watt lamp. The 20K lumen projector you mentioned will take a lot of power to run. I would find out how much amperage the projector you are thinking about using draws before you buy it especially If you are going to be using a high power projector. I would also have the projector on a separate circuit than the other equipment like sound and lighting in case you get a power draw/surge that trips a breaker. When I do outdoor shows I ALWAYS have the projector on an UPS battery back up power supply of at least 600 watts. Even if its on the same circuit as the sound. This way the projector stays up if a breaker gets tripped or a generator dies and you can shut down the projector in time if you loose all power. If you try to power up and re strike a lamp based projector before the lamp has cooled down the chances are GREAT that you will hear a "POP" and its game over.

BTW-- Generally Lights draw a lot more power than sound. The double yellow halogen work/ floodlights that are EVERYWHERE usually draw 500 watts each or around 10 AMPS total when they are turned on. If you have the sound and projector on the same circuit and some idiot plugs in a floodlight. The power is sure to go off. I would also make sure you have unfettered access to the circuit breakers and know which ones your equipment is tied to. If you are doing an outdoor show in a public place the chances are pretty good that the people with the keys to the place have gone home and YOU can't get to the circuit board so you will be running around in the dark like a headless chicken. I ALWAYS have a pre-tested (5 minute run time) Generator near the Building beside the extension cords so if power goes out I can fire up the generator and have power back online in less than a minute. You may want to print this out and keep it with you.

Hope this helps

Good Luck
