Playing 2-channel stereo music from 5.1 setup in 4.1?

AV receiver: Yamaha RX-V473

5.1 speaker setup: SpeakerCraft AIM5 One + SpeakerCraft 8.2bas = all in-ceiling, with LCR pointed towards back wall

Is it possible when casually listening to stereo music for the AVR to play on all speakers except the center channel? (FL, FR, RL, RR, sub)

If so, is it usually possible for the AVR to switch so the two front speakers play either the left or right stereo channel, and the rears play the other? (the reason for this is because the HT living room is open on both sides for people to walk through)

Not sure if this type of thing is generally possible, or if people usually just play via DSP like Pro Logic IIx?

Read your manual for the final answer, but usually what you want to do seems to involve setup menus and that ain't very casual.

What is your real problem?

You can set your AVR to multichannel or some music channel option thant plays all speakers and lower the center channel to 0. My Denon 1912 AVR lets me play music in PLII i just lower to the center channel compared to the FL and FR.

Yes, Yamaha has its '7ch Stereo' mode. Under 'DSP Parameters' in setup, you can adjust the volume going to each additional speaker from 0 to 100% in 1% increments. Set the center to 0 and the side surrounds to whatever you like. The signal going to the extra speakers will be exactly the same as the left and right, except at whatever percentage of the signal volume you have set.
