Suggestions for SAS Controller for NAS

Thread Starter
I'm looking to add an 8 port SAS (mini) Controller to my NAS for expandability reasons. I want something without RAID so that I can use the drives as JBOD with Drive Bender. I just don't want something that makes the drive proprietary and that I'm not able to yank the drive and another windows machine can see. If that is possible with a RAID card, fine, all the better. I'd like to keep it on the cheaper side, so probably no more than $150 max. I'm willing to EBAY if need be. I just don't know enough about the cards and would like some suggestions!

I have a free 4x PCIe port that I can use. I'm fine if the card is an 8x and has to operate at 4x until I change out motherboards in the future.

Recommendations?

Thanks!!
LL

IBM M1015 often goes for sub $100 prices on ebay. It also happens to be one of the most popular HBAs for home users. You will have to flash it with the LSI 8i firmware though before you can use it for JBOD.

Yup. I did this.

For 80$ its best option

8 ports and x8 speed card.

I just picked up an M1015 for $95 including shipping from a random online retailer. Ebay prices are kinda crazy for them right now, but you can get them used from various online websites for sub $100, just watch to make sure you are getting the bracket with it as well, else you'll need to track one down for an additional $5-10 or so.

There's full process if flashing it with screenshots in my server thread

Awesome. I had seen that card but didn't get a chance to do much research about it. It's going for well over $100 right now on Ebay. I'll see if I can find an online vendor maybe. Thanks for the suggestions!

Link? Cheapest buy now I found was $139. They have one up for auction but it's at $91 with a day and half to go.

Don't be an idiot and say something is available for $85 when it's not. Something from Dec. 7th is completely irrelevant. I know I can wait for new ones to pop up on ebay, but you made it sound like you could get that pricing now.

these cards are several hundred brand new, around the 400 to 600 mark. 85 is close enough to 100 and very far from 400. you should know how ebay works and take the help thats offered.

(insert "panties in bunch" picture here. cant do it while at work. google search for an image would get me show the door)

on a side note, i got a rocketraid 2320 off ebay. guy was selling 20 of these at 109. i saw a make an offer button. someone in the past said they took an offer for 50 and thought that was aggressive. i actually made an offer for 35, and they accepted too. so it can go any which way. 85 is very possible, but no cables and maybe need a full height adapter. 150 might get you everything.

You deleted my post from my phone?

There was no name calling.
