BEATS BY DRE

Guys, I've seen a number of really convincing advertisements on TV about those Beats By Dre headphones. They seem to have a pretty great noise cancellation and solid over-the-ear design. I've seen a number of musicians (like Lil Wayne) wearing them constantly too. My question is, if you could only go with one set of headphones for $400, would it be the Beats by Dre PRO or the Beats by Dre HD? I only have $400 to spend at this point, so I really need some advice. I have a $10 Best Buy gift card to spend also, so please factor this into your suggestions.

Also, if you could suggest a color, that would be best.

Thanks,
RO

I wouldn't purchase either of those. Lil Wayne gets those for free and beats get the advertising he creates. I purchased a pair of these for my wife and then one for myself very comfortable.

Call WorldWide Stereo they can beat the retail price or you can shop around and find them for less.

BTW You may want to post your question in the 2 channel audio forum. I'm kind of a Klipsch Nut smile.gif...but the headphones are comfortable and sound great.

I cannot find the link, but it was reported recently that there are more 'fake" Beat by Dr Dre headphones sold than real ones! Some of the fake ones are likely as good or better than the real ones, however, as those are way overpriced and your are paying for the "Dre" name!

fwiw save yourself $250 and look at a pair of audio technica ath-m50's if you need more booming bass just add a fiio6 headphone amp for $30 just a suggestion

Thanks for all the prompt replies - but, I'm pretty sold on the sound profile that Beats By Dres offer. From the reviews I hear, the bass is fantastic. Also, the headphones you posted look a little crazy! I'm sure they look good on you though! JKJK

So I just found out that Best Buy is running their "hifi" spring sale in a week or two. I think these headphones come with a subscription to the Rhapsody service. Do you think I should jump on this? I have the gift card which should cover the extended warranty on the headphones which I probably need.

Sounds like your all set. Congrats on your choice

I think you'll find a lot more educated input from the headphone enthusiasts over at head-fi.org.

You are paying $400 for a $50 headphone. Dr. Dre is laughing all the way to the bank.

Beats are overpriced junk. i worked as a pawn broker for electronics in college and we hated those things. Total rip off and poor quality. There are TONS of other brands that cost way less and you get much more. Please stay away. ill ask my buddy whos a DJ that owned beats at one time and what he graduated to. The one he got had amazing sound and incredible construction. I auditioned all of his. he was my roomate awhile back. ill get back to you. In the mean time check consumer reports they always do a writeup on headphones for there electronics issue. i believe they ranked the pioneers the highest, second bose but bose was twice as expensive. like i said ill get back to you.

This is also a very true statement. They are paid to wear them, and they get the items for free.

Its like the jordan shoe that caused riots that was $500. Was it 5x better at performing as a shoe compared to a $100 version? No, its consumerism at its worse.

You'd better try before you buy. Every review I've seen by those who care more about good sound than bling have found them to be over-priced by a factor of ten. And if you're not interested in getting advice save all concerned time and effort and don't ask for it in the first place.

Sitting here in the studio right now with my trusty 15-year old Sony MDR-7506 headphones that I bought for $95 in the day. I demoed those Beats one time to to see what all the hoopla was about. Not bad but they still sounded inferior to others I've used. At a certain point, one has to remember the old adage of "diminished returns."

I've listened to the Bose, Beats by Dre, Audio Technica noise cancelling headphones before I bought the Audio Technicas. Granted, they look fairly big but I then listened to AKGs new headphones and they blew everything away. They have a bigger and smaller set which the bigger ones have more bass and they look WAY better then all the rest. I now have a set of the AKG headphones.

From his initial post, it seems the OP never wanted advice in the first place. To the OP, buy a pair of $50 dollar headphones and put the money you saved toward a Bose Acoustimass. Seriously, I hear all the famous people have one, must be super-awesome!
Pretty sure he's trolling. If he's not. Let him buy those Beats, and let those better informed be happy with their acoustically superior, yet cheaper headphones.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 62

Damn i hate beats.

Upon checking a few of his other posts, I'd have to agree with you.

If you want street cred, buy the beats. If you want good headphones, I highly recommend Bowers and Wilkins p5.

+1

If he truly liked bass, he'd get some Ultrasones or Sony XB series headphones and add a killer headphone amp biggrin.gif

But all my favorite football players were wearing them as they got off the bus to enter stadium? I mean all of them. They must be good, right? smile.gif

Never heard them but admit I'm curious. I use Sennheiser 650. Maybe I'll stay put..

If someone is looking for headphones with good bass, the Sennheiser Momentums are great. They don't have the same sensitivity but since they are targeting the same demographic (they are also releasing a black and red pair), they are a much better headphone for the money.

BTW, the Pros do not have noise cancellation.

I really don't understand the hate toward beats headphones.  I own a pair and well so does everyone else for the most part.  They're really nice sounding and they definitely look better than any thing else out there by far.

Beats are cheaply made headphones that are more fashion than quality...but that is just my opinion! Sennheiser...much better, IMHO!

you said it all "they look better"....

for $400 you can truly buy top notch cans, and beats is not one of them.

I don't own any, and I own multiple pairs of headphones that, to my ears, sound better than Beats rolleyes.gif

Beats are overpriced fashion statements. If you bought them because you like the looks or because you want to conform to the crowd that owns them, that's fine and that makes it a good value to you. It's a personal statement, and aesthetic choice is in the eye of the beholder. I happen to think Grados "look good" because I don't need to look like the Beats herd:

If you want good sounding headphones, there are better headphones for less money. Incidentally, Lifehacker picked the SR80i depicted above as one of their five best sounding headphones. Notably, no Beats made their list.
