Help me choose a 60- 70 inch "dumb" TV

I just finished my basement, which includes a 13' x 18' room pegged as a "TV Room". The room will be fairly dark, with the only sunlight issue being a set of french doors out to the deck (but a curtain can be closed if that becomes an issue). I'm currently thinking 60" to 70", but the wife is pushing for smaller. I figure with the TV mounted on the wall, normal use would be sitting anywhere from 8' to 15' from the screen.

We don't want any of the smart TV options, since we have an Xbox 360 that can do all that, and have no desire for 3D. Typical use would be lots of gaming (xbox 360 and wii), HD movies, and normal HD TV content. I'm not looking for the top of the line / be all end all set, but want a good quality for what we'll use it for. I'm also definitely not against looking at last year's models (as prices would obviously be better).

I'm leaning towards a plasma (even though we've only ever had LCD), due to not having much glare issues and a semi-dark environment, potential wide viewing angle with the size of the room, and good input lag for gaming. Can I get a few options to point me in the right direction to start my search?

I'd check out the owners thread for the Panasonic TC-P"U50, TC-P"UT50 & TC-P"ST50. The ST50 gives you a better panel and would give you better bright room performance but that doesn't seem to be a factor for you. The ST50 comes in 60" and 65" and the UT50 comes in 60". The ST50 is the higher end model and the one that I would lean toward. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who has anything bad to say about either model. Both come with Smart and 3D but both are very solid performers and the ones I'd consider first. If you're dead set on nothing Smart or 3D, then I'd look at the Panasonic TC-P"U50. It comes in a 60" as well. And the Samsung E530 is also a viable option though I believe personally the U50 is a better FP. Best of luck with the options.

Thanks for the great options. I've been reading through them and can't wait to read a little deeper. One thing that did jump out at me though was the CNET review stating that these FPs use more (sometimes signifcantly more in teh case of the U50) power than the equivalent LCD or LED. Is that typical? I thought I read that plasmas use less energy than LCDs?

It is typical that PDPs use more power, significantly more is not always the case though. Usually it's only 10-25$ a year more. Which I find to be very small.

Yes, power consumption is a bit more with plasma, but if you are paying $$$$ for a panel I see little reason to quibble over $10-$20 a year. For me plasma is worth every penny.

Considering the price difference you'll pay for an LCD the power consumption cost is a non issue.

Exactly. They definitely operate a bit hotter but I've never had this be an issue. I feel as though those that complain about plasmas being "energy hogs" are just being a bit over the top.

Better yet, Mitsubishi Laservue! I don't own it, but if I had room for a 73" TV, this would be my only choice. I knew within 30 seconds of watching, that this was superior to anything else I have ever seen. I can still remember the demo in 3D from two years ago. I'm not a 3D fan, but the picture quality itself blew me away. I have seen Pioneer Kuro. In comparison, the sharpness, and color purity of the Misubishi Laservue was superior. The size was compelling too.
