budget receiver upgrade

Im curreny using a Yamaha v571. Does anyone think upgrading to a more powerful/discrete amp receiver would make things sound better? If so what brands/lines should I be looking at? I have had good experiences with A4l, so Im okay with refurbished.

What speakers? Listening levels? Room details? Music? Movies/tv? Is there something you're lacking in features on the current avr? Budget?

Speakers:
Polk Monitor 30 l/r
Polk CS20
Mordaunt Carnival 1 surround
Mordaunt Carnival 9 Sub

Listening at medium levels - we have a condo

75/25 Movie vs Music

I'd love android app and for it to be easier for the wife to work

Budget is 300 or so. Room is 12x19 or so

I see denon has a refurb 1712 for 199 and at a4l I could get a 1713 for 329. Would any of those be a sound upgrade to my 571?

I've been eyeing up that Denon 1712 seems like a great budget receiver.

Yes, the 1712 (7.1, non-networking) features the more advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT also found on the Denon "CI" models. The 1713 does as well; however, is only 5.1 but is a networking model with Zone 2 pre-outs.

The 1713 fits better, then b/c I have 5 speakers and would love to control via my phone. Pity it costs so much more.

Well, don't know about getting any significant amp difference at that budget; personally I'd spend money on better speakers. Not much amp difference at that price point, altho you might get better room correction setup (altho I've not had any experience with YPAO), perhaps that suggestion for Audyssey XT in the Denon. What dsp each avr offers for sound shaping is subjective in any case.

Onkyo's iRemote app gets pretty good reviews. Don't know about others. I use a Harmony remote, makes for easier single remote use.

That is one nice thing about avr's further up the food chain is more sound shaping choices. Otherwise I just peeked at the V571s general attributes, kinda surprised it can't separately define crossover point per speaker. There are some excellent small speakers if you go ID still at a lower price point...like the Ascend 200SEs or even the slightly larger 170SEs (but more expensive than those pokes).

+1 for better quality bookshelf speakers. Speakers will give you more of a noticeable jump in sound quality than electronics - there are exceptions of course.

I thought about speakers first, but the CS20 center I have is working well and I'd like to stick with Polk cherry finish. I'd need about an inch more height in shelf space for RTIs. The new TSx would just fit with no top clearance at all.

Anyway do any of these make sense:

Yamaha 671 ($344 - B-stock)
Denon 1713 ($350 - Open Box or Refurb)
Denon 1613 ($250 Refurb)
Yamaha 673 (400 Open Box)
Pioneer VSX-51 ($312 Open Box, +45 Square trade = $357)
HK 1700 (can be had under 300)
Yamaha 473 ($300 new)

Everything but the Pioneer would be from authorized shipper
