Reciever only plays audio after toggling hdmi ARC settings after startup

Really weird but i open the tv, then the reciever but no audio. so i head to settings for HDMI control and switch ARC off then on again and audio works. If i power off the reciever i have to do that again to get it to work. Its yamaha rx-v373 and tv is panasonic ut50 which is ARC compatible. The yamaha is synced with the tv as turning off the tv turns off the reciever and it auto switches to the correct audio channel, but no audio goes through unless i do the steps i described.

HDMI CEC connectivity can be glitchy with some components although a work around would be to simply connect an optical cable from the TV to the AVR. Otherwise, try unplugging the AVR for a few minutes and if still no joy, try resetting the AVR's microprocessor.

its alright now, i figured it out, it was the panasonic tv, i shouldve gone to viera link menu and turned speaker selection to home cinema instead of TV. its not in the manual but aparently it works. I was gonna get optical cable if it didnt work. so if anyone has panasonic tv thats how to fix it. It wouldve been easier had they just had ARC option clearly labeled in the menu. thanks anyway.

Note that with some TVs the optical connection is actually better as the HDMI(ARC) can generally only pass a PCM 2.0 signal while the optical can pass DD 5.1 (eg. Netflix).

The specs by the HDMI.org website decribing the ARC state:

Which audio formats are supported over the Audio Return Channel?

The Audio Return Channel supports all the same audio formats that can be sent through a traditional S/PDIF audio connection, including Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM audio.

Yes, but implementation can vary.

i have 2.0 set up so no worries there regardless. but i think as long as the hdmi cable is of decent quality then it should work.

The culprit is usually the time the TV needs to initialize. It might take quite some time to be ready to communicate with the AVR.
If the AVR starts up to early, the ARC feature won't work quite often and the handshake needs to be reinitialized by i.e. switching the AVR back and forth between inputs etc.
