Fitness training room acoustic problems?

Pretty new in the acustic area. I have an owner of a fitness business and they have a room that they do all the instructural workouts in and he says there is so much echo in the room that they have trouble instructing. I will be looking at the job this Tuesday and was wondering what I need to look for? Is this simply something that can be done by taking about 15% of the floor square footage and adding about that many square feet of accoustic panels to the walls?
I would appreciate any help/knowledge in this subject?
Thanks Darby

Don't spend money on acoustic panels - you're not in my business.smile.gif

What you want are things that are soft. Hard surfaces reflect sound. A cheaper alternative would be to go to Home Depot and pick up fiberglass insulation and secure it to the walls/ceilings. Go to some fabric store and cover it in a color that goes with your room - not only is fiberglass unsightly, you don't want people touching it.

If your floors are concrete, some carpeting would help a lot. Put thick rubber insulation under it.

I would use 1-2 inches of JM Linacoustic behind the fabric or OC703. Post some pictures of the room showing the the walls particcularly above and below the mirrors and the ceiling and we could advise more. A good resource for you to get to know is fabricmate.com It is a company selling materials to put soft treatments in commercial spaces, but we know it here because of their willingness to sell to the DIY home theater builder. For sure you want fire resistant fabric which they sell.

I'm in the gym 6 days a week for group classes and I know about the problem you are describing. Not that any of the gyms were interested in doing anything about it.
