Yes, great colors, low input lag, impulse backlight strobing.  It is probably the best display for gaming around in this size.
The 65" W850a, which shares much of its underpinnings and was just released this week, should also be a standout gaming display.

So do we know when sites will be doing reviews on the w850a? the $2700 rebate price is only good until the 5th of october so only have a few days to make a decision.

What rebate price are you talking about?

I could be mistaken, but the retail price is $3000, there is currently a $300 rebate that knocks it down to $2700.

See this site: http://www.abt.com/product/72641/Sony-KDL65W850A.html
post #1506 of 4333
$2700 is Sony's price on their website. I don't think it will ever go higher. Only lower, and that's a good thing for people like us.
Yeah, $2700 seems to be the correct retail price.
I'm hoping for reviews soon too.
Yea, I called sony, $2700 is retail. Really have my eyes on this set, looks like the only difference between the 850 and 900 is the motionflow.

Differences that I know of is 120hz compared to 240hz and the w850a doesn't have the "deep black panel" whatever that is.

From the Sony site: "Discover other screen technologies from SonyDeep Black Panels – vibrant colour and contrast. Choose a BRAVIA TV with a Deep Black Panel and you’ll notice th difference in your whole viewing experience. The panel has a low-reflective, clear surface which helps deliver high contrast, realistic detail and accurate colours. Keep your eye on the action with no distractions and no ‘wash-out’ effect on the picture when light from lamps or the sun hits the screen."

The W850 presumably has the downscale Opticontrast panel: "The TV ‘panel’ is the layer between the TV backlight, such as LED, and you, the viewer. How this is constructed has a significant impact on picture quality. OptiContrast Panels have a special resin layer which absorb any diffused light delivered from the backlight. What you see is high contrast and natural colours on screen – bringing out detail in the darkest movie scenes – and a real sense of depth.

This special resin layer inside OptiContrast Panels also absorbs ambient light in the room. When watching TV, it reduces glare from light sources such as lamps or sunlight. Turn off your TV and you have a beautiful surface to enhance the room – it’s part of our Monolithic Design concept."

Hi, just got my KDL55W900A a few days ago from a local authorized Sony Reseller. Packaging looks new, but inside I could tell the things been opened before and gone through. For instance, the yellow page that details the contents of the box was missing except for a little corner piece. How can I determine if my unit is the very latest model or an earlier one they are getting rid of on me? My fear is that it is a unit somebody else returned for whatever reason.

If we've covered that topic already in this thread, please direct me to where those posts are. Thanks!

when i bought the 55" W9 i already knew it was a winner.

but read this post from Craig
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1473062/official-sony-x9-xbr-55x900a-xbr-65x900a-owners-thread/2130#post_23796969
so the W9 has a Samsung Panel and the X9 one from LG.
interesting

the motion blur is much much smoother and the picture overall is more realistic and presents itself like the 55W900 which we and many reviewers think is the best LED on the market.
amen to that Craig! smile.gif

The w900a for sure doesn't use a samsung panel (thank god, their terrible panels), the model of the panel in the w9 is DQ3Y550LN0101 which is from AU Optronics. The information on this panel is kept secret and there is literally no spec sheet published for it. How you can make a post for people to read stating "the w9 uses a samsung panel" when the source you read that from is not sure about it, is beyond me. Stop spreading false information! You also go from saying its the worst LCD "crap" to then praising it like its the best thing you have seen.

Is there any picture setting that is generally considered a positive for this tv? Such as "Smooth Gradation", "Black Corrector", "Adv. Contrast Enhancer", "LED Dynamic Control", "Live Color" etc. Usually all these "features" should be kept to off to my knowledge. But something in there is worth having on with this model?

I can't speak for or against the panel thing above, but you are absolutely correct in that information keeps getting parroted around in a circular fashion.  Drives me nuts.  I'm guessing it follows this progression.  Make {X} "that panel is Samsung", "the Chevy Nova does terribly in Mexico", or "Mikey died of Pop Rocks":

  1. Person A: "I wonder if {X}"
  2. Person B: (because of person A) "I think {X}"
  3. Person C: (because of person B) "It's been said that {X}"
  4. Person D: (because of person C) "it's {X}
  5. Person A, B, C, E: (because of person D) "it's {X}"
  6. (etc.)

Recently purchased a KDL-55W900A and am VERY impressed with the TV. Rich colors and deep blacks paint a pretty picture! Especially pleased with the wide viewing angle, which is better than I expected. My only nit is the glossy screen which causes reflection problems during the daytime. Glossy screens, however, seem to be the trend in higher-end TVs for the sake of PQ. Guess you can't have everything...

Hi guys

I just bought the w900a and the 47inch 802 series sony tv. I am kind of disappointed in both of the tv's though. I have lots of light bleeding through both panels. The 802a has bleeding all through the panel, but the 900a is real bad on the bottom left side. Is this normal for these panels. I mean the color is really good on the 900a but the light coming through really takes me out of the video games or movies when ever there is a transition in scenes when their is a scene transition and the screen is black. Or during all black loading scenes in games.

please let me know because im thinking about sending both back but I don't want to go through the hassle if Im going to recieve another tv thats just as bad if not worse.

So does impulse mode really increase input lag? Also, when in use how much does the brightness take a nose dive. Would it be on par or brighter than a plasma?

I completely agree. The problem is that pg_ice has posted nothing but propaganda. He then has the audacity to use foul language, and send me a PM (again using foul language). My concern is that some one who is skimming through this thread will see his posts and take them as facts, just as he reads other posts and takes them as fact before doing any research. The fact that he told me to go "buy a w9" when its clear I have one, tells me he doesnt read anything in this thread other than his own posts.

In light of current offerings it is arguably the best 1080p LED set of the year. I'm a plasma guy and I am very impressed with the picture quality, as well as feature set.

I started skimming over his posts pages ago...

Has anyone else tried to clean their w900a? I am worried to dust the screen off because it looks extremely easy to scratch.

Use a microfiber cloth. You can order them on Amazon. I use iKlear

Yes, it does. switched to game mode and the 1080p/24 10 bit was still showing on the set. The 10 bit only shows up with 4:4:4 color mapping.

Hi All,

After reading this thread, I read multiple of mentions of a W850A Model being on the way. I dont see a 55inch W850A listed - is there a 55inch W850A on the roadmap from Sony? Does anybody have any idea when this model is going to be released?

Thanks,
Vikram
