Official Sony KDL-55W900A Owners Thread - Page 60

Can anyone confirm whether the 55W900A sends multichannel PCM through ARC? With the 55W900A hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-822k I only get 2-channel audio via ARC using various devices that are definitely pushing PCM multichannel surround. I'd prefer to have game systems connected separately so I don't have to have everything run through the receiver and flip from movie settings to game settings.

Pretty sure it does not.

When you finish playing the 360 switch the TV back to auto.

Thank you.

yeah, it only seems to send dolby digital5.1 through, anything else gets converted to 2ch.
i tried it with a ps3 and when you configure hdmi audio output only dolby 5.1 and pcm 2 channel are enabled by the auto-setup process. when i manually ticked all the other audio output formats (DTS, PCM 5.1, 7.1 etc.) and tried with playing some Dolby and DTS trailers my onkyo 609 still only showed 2ch pcm as input. i also tried with "the last of us" which has both dolby d 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio options and only dolby would work, when i set it to DTS i wouldn´t get any sound at all.

I recently bought this TV (mostly for gaming and because I never had a TV before).

I just noticed (for lack of a better term) 'color uniformity' issues when viewing the screen at different viewing angles.

If I sit directly in front and center where my head is positioned in the middle of the screen at a 0 degree angle then all the colors look awesome.

If I move my position off center then the colors get distorted.... ex: reds become orange (netflix)

I attached some pictures to give you guys a better idea of what I'm talking about. I increased the exposure of the images to exaggerate the problem. As you can see, the red turns orange when viewed from any side angle.

Since this is the first LCD TV I have ever bought I don't know if this is something I should be concerned about.

Is this a known issue for all LCD tvs?

Is there a way to fix this issue?

Is this something that can be fixed by Sony?

I tried loading up Netflix on another TV in the house but it doesn't have the same screen so I cannot really compare it to anything.

@kaskade that's par for the course with LCD. Move out of the sweet spot and you'll lose color and brightness accuracy. If you're looking for great off-angle viewing, you'll need to look at plasma. Of course, they have their own issues as well ...

I finally made the decision to pick up this tv. Anyone have any reccomendations of where the best place to buy and what warranty is the best for the money? Wherever I purchase from, I Want to make sure I will have a hassle free return if something is wrong with the panel.
@domlando to be honest, and even if it gets a lot of hate, Best Buy has been fantastic in my quest to find a good TV. My w900a will be delivered tomorrow, and it's my fifth TV in four months. I've had no issues exchanging all my duds.

I will then buy a warranty through Squaretrade.

Bought my W900A at a local Best Buy store. Purchased Square Trade extended warranty from Costco.

I bought the 900A from Best Buy a week ago and am amazed at the quality of the picture and overall high aesthetics.

The Sony replaced a 7 year old Pioneer plasma (still excellent) but the Sony has vibrancy and pop that the Pioneer can't replicate. The blacks are not as good but
I can live with that for the superior picture.

The 3D is good ( I bought Avatar and Prometheus). I had to go direct from my old PS3 to the Sony (HDMI) and use optical to my older Denon receiver. The Denon will not pass the
the 3D signal. This workaround works fine.

I love the 3D samples via the Apps (Sony Open golf and Wimbledon). The $95.88 credit to my Netflix account (1 year at $7.99) was another
nice bonus - the promotion is still active. I don't see using Hulu Plus much but I did sign up for the free year.

I looked at the Sony 4k models and they were tempting but I don't see the content out there in the near future.

Didn't realize you could buy warranties at Costco for other stores' products. Did you get the 3 year warranty that follows a 2 year manufacturer warranty, or something else?

thanks

How wide is the viewing angle (in people or sofa cushions) before image suffers?

Do anyone experience any cross talk while watching 3D movies? is it certain movies that can cause this? I have always heard this Sony has really good 3d, Any advice??
@papadixx are you saying you own thus set and are seeing crosstalk? Or are you just asking?

@jimp it all depends on the television in question

Jim I know on my HX850 I can move 30 degree's from either side before seeing any image issues such as color fade ect. Viewing angles may differ with the w900 I don't know for sure though.

I own the set and was watching an animated 3d movies and was seeing a fair amount of cross talk. I was wondering if it could be the movie, connection or if it is just the tv

You can't definetly quantize that. Thechnically, the image changes with every single degree of change of viewing angle. Strictly, even when you sit dead-center in "recommended HD distance" (say, 2 meters from a 55"), then you already have a different image on the outer borders, compared to the image center. In particular, 10° off-angle is already enough to make gamma-shift become visible, especially in the near-black dark tones. (And when sitting dead-center, you already have 10°, if not more, to the lateral image borders.)

Practically, "30° off-center" surely is a number where you still have a decent image without too severe image degradation. But everyone has to see & judge for himself. Some say "still awesone" where others say "totally unacceptable". Perception is individually different.

The w900 has a better viewing angle than the F8000 that i returned imho. The F8000 would lose color almost immediately where the w900 maintains its colors and picture much better as you move further to the sides.

You can buy the Square Trade extended warranty at Costco for a TV purchased at any legitimate retailer (Best Buy, Sears, etc.). I bought the 3-year warranty that starts after the Sony 1-year coverage in addition to the extra 1-year provided by American Express, for a total of 5 years.

Regarding System Software Update Release Date 11/07/2013 Version PKG3.901AAA File Size 159.85 MB.

After my 55W900A TV updated to the newest firmware my set no longer has the ability to use my Sony BDP-S5100 x[YCbCr/RGB (HDMI) settings. AUTO selects 4:4:4 but screen is purple, 4:2:2 is Red, only the RBG setting works correctly now. Had no issues using any of the choices before update. Sony BDP-S5100 firmware is M15R0163 .

I just sent the above to Sony support after updating the firmware last night. HDMI 1,3 and 4 all have same result. I get the same result whether I go thru my Yamaha receiver via HDMI or straight to TV from player via HDMI. mad.gif

I never used a Square Trade warranty before. How reliable are they compared to a Sony or store bought warranty?

The Costco website indicates a 5-star rating based on hundreds of reviews. That and the incredible price made the Square Trade extended warranty a no-brainer for me.

I am not sure about the 909 TV you currently have, but the w900 is excellent with gaming. I play a lot of FPS games and fast action games, the Sony w900 handles them all very well.

Input lag is very low on game mode is one of the lowest out there, My experience applies to console gaming (not a PC game player).

Sounds awesome... I will go with the w900a... console gamer as well

Can anyone tell me if this TV has ghosting issues in game mode or stutter? Most game modes on TV's disable all motion processing which then causes all kinds of ghosting issues and judder.

Also, could someone post some pics of the TV in a dark room while in game mode on a mostly black screen or a black title screen with some text or logo on it etc? I'd like to see how badly game mode effects black levels.
