Needing some consultation

Hello All,

Its now a month that I am looking to buy a good projector for my small room in my dorm.
My budget is around 1200$(Actually 900 euros). Because I concluded that there is no chance
to get a good new projector with this budget I decided to go for a second hand good projector.

Its not that I am starting out a new topic like any other noobs might do! Its a month that I am reading reviews in AVS, projectorrevies, PCMag and other places but I wasn't able to come to a final conclusion. I was thinking of Mitsubishi HC-4000 or HC-3800! Then I find out about BenQ W6000 however read in the review of BenQ on this site that if you have the budget for this you might better go for some Pana or Epson!

I didn't find any Pana which would be better than BenQ!(According to projectorreviews!) But I found Epson Home Cinema 3020 which I don't know if it is better than Mitsus or BenQ. So I decided to post this question here and ask for your opinions.

I would be vert grateful if somebody helps me about this!

I should say I don't care about 3D. What I want is a projector most imporatntly with a good
colour quality!

For that price, if you can deal with the limited placement issues, I'd look at the Benq 1070 (DLP/3D), the (LCD's) Epson 3020 3D or the Epson 8350 2D. Since it's a small room, you may have issues as some would require you to place the pj almost 13' from the screen. http://www.eliteprojectorcalculator.com/ is pretty easy to use and you can look at some placement/brightness numbers.

Actually because I am getting a second hand one, I believe BenQ W6000 would be much better than 1070, right?
So are these 8350 and 3020 any better than Mitsubishis or no?

If you're not RBE sensitive, then DLP generally projects a more "dynamic" picture. Since you're in the used market, I suggest that you check out a Sony LCoS/SXRD before the other LCD models as well.

The used Sony in your price ranges could be VPL-VW60, HW10 or HW15.

For the record, I had the Mitus hc3800, and the 3 Sony's. My primary pj is a JVC.

I checked the prices, however even in the second hand market these projectors are very expensive. The only available ones in that price range were:
Sony VPL-VW50, VPL-VW60 and HW10, which I am not sure even if they are much better than say Sanyo PLV-Z3000 right?

So then you prefer the three sonys to HC3800 right?

Well, I also had a Sanyo z4000 which is LCD, not impressed at all. Got rid of it after 2 months due to its grayish black. Picture is dim too.

DLP and the LCoS look are quite different. If you're not RBE sensitive, I actually preferred the HC4000 over the 3800 due to slightly better black. For the money, it's a great alternative to the Sony. However, Sony definitely has better contrast and is more flexible with installation.

BTW, all DLP's are noisy, comparing to LCD and LCoS.

Among the 3 Sony's, VW60 has better optics than VW50 and HW10.

Hope I don't confuse you further.

It seems that I am not RBE sensitive but on the other hand any other person who wants to watch a movie with me suffers from it! If it is slightly I can live with it!

Thanks a lot! You are not confusing but clarifying! So in the end what I didn't understand is if HW10 is better than HC3800 or not?

For the same money, HW10 is the way to go in terms of:

- placement flexibility
- quietness
- contrast
- brighter
- quality

If the HC3800 is 20% or less, then it's a toss up. It's only about 8 pounds vs. Sony's 23, or 3x the weight.

Only about 5% of the people are RBE sensitive. Naturally my wife is on the extreme side. Both my daughter and I can see them, but it's not a deterrent.

Then I will try to find a sony if its reasonably cheap!
BTW I used http://www.eliteprojectorcalculator.com/ for Sony VW-60 and it also has a zoom option. Using zoom option will not affect my display, right? Cause my rooms length is 4 meters! And I cannot put the projector farther away!

Good point. The Sony has a 1.8x zoom while the hc3800 is only 1.5x.

The less you zoom in, the brighter the picture.

My screen is Da-lite HP2.8g, so has a lot of punch. The new one is 2.3 or 2.4g. For either one, I'll go with a high power/gain screen, say 92" if you only got about 4 meters.

I'm not quite sure if you mean zoom in to make the picture larger or not, but here's a general rule I just read in another thread...

1. Moving the projector closer to the screen and using larger zoom will have a brighter image, lower contrast, and less focus
2. Moving the projector further from the screen and using less zoom will have a darker image, higher contrast, and more focus

Hey Guys,

After some readings and thinking I decided to add up to my budget and I can see then I will be able to go for:

1)Mitsubishi HC7800
2)Panasonic AE-7000
3)Sony HW-30
4)JVC X30

Of course, image quality and most importantly color quality and sharpness are the most important discriminative factors for me. Do you have any priorities between these or do you have any better projector in mind with the same price range?

The X30 is basically the same as the RS45 I understand? If you need CIH, and the best blacks, but maybe a higher operation cost, the JVC seems to be the choice. Thanks alot for this information.

In a second check to used market prices I believe I cannot afford W30 nor X30!
Either I have to wait for a Wv60 to enter the used market here! Or I have to buy
one of the cheapest ones! Still the important thing is does HC7800 really justifies
the price to pay for it!!? Or if it is better to go for a projector like panny ae-4000!
Or go for HC3800 or 4000.
