To be fair, I do not have a 10,000 dollar sound system. But I do have an acceptable 5.1 that did play all the other Bond films(from the Bond 50 set) without problem. I also just watched the Avengers, and my god- the sub seemed to work great, shaking items in the room, and providing complete immersion with impacts you could feel- all at a volume that allowed the dialogue to be at an enjoyable level. I thought it was just my set-up, but there certainly are others that had the sound issue. The lows/bass/explosions/use of sub was excellent and the dialogue was excellent, but it seemed like I could only get one or the other. If I set it so that the subs were providing an acceptable immersion, the dialogue would be far louder then enjoyable BUT if I set it so the dialogue was acceptable, the explosions were far less then enjoyable. Maybe the frequencies used for the explosions were just too low for my (and the other guy's) sub to pick up? I don't know. Otherwise, a very enjoyable film. Excellent review.

take the disk back. I have a ps3 slim and it plays the movie just fine and so does my laptop with a Panasonic BD-Rom burner

Laptop is a Dell Vostro 3450 with a 2640m i7, 8 GB ram, WDC Scorpio 750GB hard drive, and Intel/AMD hybrid graphics running Power DVD 12 on the Radeon 7650 (performance mode)

Have you tried increasing the level of your center channel?

I've got a fairlly high end setup now (center channel weighs 40lbs), and the dialog is crisp and clear on Skyfall. No issues with the bass either.

He's saying the opposite, the dialog was recorded hot and the center channel actually needs to be lowered. I agree with that, and I actually did lower the centre channel 2dB part way through the movie so I could turn up the master volume more.

The poor dynamic range on some of the explosions might be the real cause, rather than hot dialog, but the result was the same. This disk does not have reference audio, the dynamic range is too compressed. Video quality is good though.

I should add to my earlier rave review of the Skyfall BD's audiotrack that I didn't modify the balance of the audio being sent to my receiver at all. As noted in my earlier post, I agree with Ralph's rating of 100 for the Skyfall audio.

That isn't what he was complaining about. If the center channel was hot, he could have heard the dialog without turning the volume up so that his sub overpowered it. None of the rest of us had that issue.

Basically either my sub was too quiet and dialogue spot on.

My sub was spot on and my dialogue was way too loud.

I think, that would mean the center channel was recorded too hot-imo.... Basically, everything being at perfect levels, the dialogue is too loud.

Yes, turning down the center channel made it enjoyable, but I've never had to adjust that for any other movie. In fact the only other time I've adjusted it is when others are sleeping and I want to watch tv without waking them.. but then I turn it up, so I can turn the rest of the volume down.. essentially giving me more dialogue with less surround speakers and sub volume. Having received the Bond 50 set as a gift, I literally had just watched every other bond film in the series and the balance was just right. Got to this movie and could not get sound adjusted right by using the main volume control... Otherwise loved the movie and sound, and no other movie has given my that issue before so thought it was worth mentioning as at least one other poster had said they action scenes weren't exactly rattling his windows either.

That's an interesting development as I didn't not experience this problem.

just for your record note a few months ago the DHS department of homeland security was able to get a
new law passed that make it illegal for you to copy anything video, for your use on computer, DVR or phone.
even for your own personal use...I am surprised it was not discussed much on here...even at all.
was I the only one paying attention to this?

No, I caught this too which stinks because my fiance can't find a decent cardio exercise on You Tube to down load to her ipad and the dvd's she likes and just purchased can't be copied to her ipad now either!

Just for the record, it has never been legal to circumvent the encryption on DVD's, or other media. That said, I just started to rip my legally purchased BDs to hard drives to watch in my theatre room - without all the forced warnings/trailers, etc. (Before I get criticised for that statement, we do have a sub-forum on this site about such activies.)

I am going to be the odd man out and say I was disappointed with the story of the movie..kind of slow moving and I think the hype got the best of me.....

Add me as as the 2nd one out. I've watched Bond movies for nearly 40 yrs and this is the worst one, I even liked QoS. So many plot holes from the opening sequence to the last scene and don't get me started on the (mis)use of usually stellar Javier Bardem. Plus what happened to the Daniel Craig reboot? After no mention of Q in the previous two movies he shows up with a lame gun(idea borrowed from Judge Dredd) and a locator? Can't cellphones do that now?
Utterly disappointing, even my wife who is an avid Bond fan described it as boring. Imagine calling a Bond movie that, usually farfetched and action packed but never boring.

I just watched this for the first time on blu ray last night. The video was as good as I've ever seen, great resolution. The audio was very good also.

Depends on who you ask. One person might give it 4 stars and another might give it 1. Maybe you need to screen it and judge for yourself.

I saw Quantum Of Solace yesterday. Totall waste of my time. They even managed to distroy all of Olga Kurylenko's screen sex-appeal, which she's got plenty off. Casino Royale was not much of a movie either IMO. I will watch Skyfall soon, don't expect much of it eventhough it got great ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench -> dull, drab, boring, humdrum

Watched the Skyfall in 2D blu ray yesterday afternoon.

I set the surround mode at "Pro Logic IIx Movie + Audyssey DSX" (that is, 9.2 with Rear Surround & Front Height).

During the final shoot-down at Skyfall, the bad guys' helicopter was moving around me from right surround, to right rear, to left rear & to left surround (I think it happened 3 times). This is going to be my demo scene when friends come over, even thou the blu ray is only a 5.1 (the other demo scene for me is Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol's "sandstorm chase" scene).

For LFE, I'll probably use The Dark Knight.

I find FOTP to be a satisfying demo material as well. The first time I watched the flight through the sandstorm, I had to duck to the avoid being hit by the disintegrating plane parts. I swear I was inches too close

A couple musings. I tend to think that Threed123's preference for a Bond character describes me to a T:

"Gutsy, glib, flippant, a trained naval officer capable of doing just about anything, a man's man, conflicted by women, but totally disarming, who liked the finer things in life."

… in my dreams. At least the dreams I felt when sitting in the theater in '63 or '64 spellbound during my first Bond movie, Goldfinger.


As to CMonMan's statement, "Also, excited that they managed to add/replace many of the characters with younger actors.. leaving a lot of future potential while not taking too much away from the series."

The alternative would be to march Q and M out on set as Weekend at Bernie's characters.
