Compact Sub... Minivee 8 vs SB-1000 vs ?

Hi, looking for a sanity check and suggestions here...

Looking for a compact sub Minivee 8 footprint is ideal, could stretch to the SVS SB-1000 footprint but that would be the max. Usage would be 60% music (all types) and 40% HT. Sub will be in a corner behind a 46" display in a ~2800 sq/ft room with many windows. Was all set on the Minivee 8 but the SB-1000 creeped in.

Overlooking price (for now), what are thoughts on all-around performance between these or is there another option (smaller footprint than SB-1000) that I am missing?

Thank you!

The 1000 is a much better sub. So if your only interest is best sound, it's a no brainer to pick the 1000.

Having said that, the mini subs sound surprisingly good for their size, so if you choose the smaller sub, you won't be terribly disappointed.

Thanks KidHorn.

I was think the SB-1000 would be a better bet given the 12" driver but wasn't sure how much the higher amp power of the Minivee would offset.

Any issues with the Minivee I have missed (besides the small size)?

I suppose with the SB-1000 being newer there may not yet be someone who has heard both?

I would wager that most people never hear both subs in an "is A better than B" thread. smile.gif But, for what little it's worth, here's what I think: The SB-1000 digs deeper, and it likely plays flatter overall, which means that while it may not be as "punchy" as the Minivee 8, it should be more "accurate".

So, unless you i) need a very small sub, ii) are willing to give up some extension and/or iii) are specifically looking for "punchiness" (which the Minivee 8 may or may not provide), the SB-1000 is the better sub to buy.

IMveryHO (obviously), and YMMV. smile.gif

Given same source and proper setup, which would I be more likely to feel hit the deep base HT effects?

Short answer: I don't know.

Longer answer: The SB-1000 extends to 24Hz @ -3dB vs. the Minivee 8's 28Hz @ -3dB, so it's possible (likely?) that the SB will benefit more from room gain to dig even deeper than the 8. But I can't say whether it will do so with enough authority vs. the Minivee.

That makes sense, thanks so much for your help!

I'm not really sure how that lack of definitive information helped...but I'm glad it did. smile.gif

Haha, I think you clarified that neither was a really bad idea and that the SB-1000 would likely hit a bit deeper but the Minivee is probably pretty acceptable.

Thanks!

Dont forget the SVS bill of rights.

I bet the Mini V doesn't even come close in that regard.

I own both Velo subs and SVS subs and I like both brands a lot so I have no owner's bias.

SVS subs are always excellent, so I would choose that based on bang for buck and their warranty/customer service. You just can't go wrong with them.

The SB1000 should outperform the MV8 by a considerable margin in terms of output capability (the Minivee is rated for -3dB @28Hz, but I believe Velo states their responses as a real world figure, rather than SVS would states their response as a "anechoic" response)

Thanks for pointing me towards the SVS, makes sense that the 12" driver will do a better job in the size room. The user loyalty in nice to see also. SB-1000 has been ordered!

Great, Please give a revue in the PB1000...Sb1000 thread.

Now it has to work in for about 12 hours so give some time.

Will be a month before the rest of the system is in to try it but I will report back.

Thanks
