looking for a Receiver wih 4ohm capability.

im building a cabinet with 2 pairs of 5.25 bravox components and a 4 ohm bravox ultimo 10" sub on a 300w plate amp.

my subwoofer is fine, however, i dont know what i can do about the 4 ohm speakers.i have plenty of car amps and a bunch of agm batteries however, i really dont want to do that.

what is the cheapest route i can take to have them wired to a receiver? i understand most are up to 6 ohm stable, however if im leniant with how far i turn the volume knob and allowing good enough cooling for the receiver, would i be already?

I would probably go with something higher like the 2113, 2112, 2312 or something.

The Onkyo 717, 818, 1010, 3010 and 5010 are all 4 Ohm capable. You can find their list of authorized dealers HERE, or you can purchase directly from Onkyo on their website. I would not drop below the 818, since the 818 is better than the 717 but the price is almost the same. I am running some 4 ohm speakers* off my 3010, so I know it works.





* I have three sets of 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel, making them appear as one 4 ohm speaker to the receiver.

these are all way out of my budget :/ so thats a no go for me... any suggestions on working with what i got?

each cabinet has 2 cross overs as well. i was told i should not run the crossover to an 8ohm load as it was not designed for that. can anyone defend that idea?

also, is it possible to just run them off the receiver i was gonna buy until i get an amplifier that is 4 ohm capable and send them there afterward?

You linked a Onkyo HT-RC330 receiver in your original post. No way to add an amp to the receiver. You need one with preamp outputs.

What's your real budget for a receiver? the RC330 is only $120. If that's the case then you need to looked for used receivers on Craiglist or ebay.

200 would be my max budget. and couldnt i add a http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_33576_Cache-CLOC-D.html or another line output converter? and just keep an agm battery sitting somewhere. Im saying if worst come to worst.

and i dotn mind looking for a used receiver, i just need to be pointed at one that fits my needs. im just not knowledgable enough in this field.

maybe that'll work if it does what it is supposed to do.

It would also help if you put in your location. That way we could scour Craigslist for receiver deals in your area.

I know absolutely nothing about the speakers you are building so maybe someone else will chime in.

The only receivers that are 4 ohm certified are pretty expensive, the cheapest one is the Pioneer 1222 at $530.

Denon is good quality, so in your price range, that's the best one I can see. Like you said in your first post, just make sure adequate cooling is there, and you'll be fine, turn it down if it gets too hot, etc.

wait wait, so all i have to worry about is the amplifier side getting hot??? i mean if i were to watch the temp it would run fine? i wouldnt have a power supply short or anything?

i have my run'ins with running low impedences. ran my prototype 5k at .25 ohm and .5 daily for months and my ab vfl 150.1 @ .25 as well. however how do i know whether the ps can withstand the impedence drop?

Essentially. The receiver will shut down before anything bad happens if you turn it up too loud.

Just don't turn it up super loud, or leave it on at loud volumes for a long time. Basically continually monitor the temps, and maybe add an exhaust fan.

well fortunately im more than just a car audio nerd, im also a computer nerd, if i wire up a few 120mm fans on the top(or the side) of the badboy blowing in i should be in good standing right?

I have a Noctua 120mm fan ontop of my Onkyo. It does not need it, but since I already owned it I might as well use it. I bought a radio shack multiple voltage ac to dc converter and stripped the end that plugs into equipment. I also bought a PC fan extension cable and stipped the end that would have plugged into the PC motherboard. I connected the extender to the ac-dc converter and then plugged the PC fan into the extender (that way I did not have to strip the Noctua fan) and made sure it blew the correct direction (so I knew I had it wired properly). I then shrink wrapped the newly made connections and I have a variable voltage fan powered by 120v AC. smile.gif

Not really needed and you would have to worry about embedding dust into the components in the receiver.

I just hooked up my new Pioneer 1522 (at $1000) to my 4 ohm Axiom M80s and center VP180. It sounds really good. Suggest OP save his pennies.

No HDMI inputs on that Pioneer receiver. Does that matter to you?

If not get this Denon AVR 3802 for $80, much more powerful than that Pioneer receiver. Won't have problems with 4 ohm loads.
