JVC RS40 vs Epson 5020

I know some people might get a little tired of these types of threads, but I've done about as much individual research on these two projectors as I can do. I am really hoping that someone who has seen both projectors perform in person could shine a little light on my questions below.

So my real questions are:

- How much better are the JVC's blacks in reality?
- How much brighter is the Epson?
- Is the difference in 3d performance really as high as I've been led to believe, with the Epson being better?
- Does the Epson have better motion performance? If so, is this only using modes that give the "soap opera" effect?

A few notes about me:

- I currently have a JVC RS 40
- I have a completely light controlled theater room
- I have a 106" screen (16:9) and the projector will be ceiling mounted ~13 feet away

I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade, as I just recently acquired the RS40, but I do wonder if maybe I would enjoy the greater brightness of the Epson. Also, while it's definitely not all about 3d performance, I do enjoy watching the occasional 3d movie, so the improved performance there intrigues me as well.

If I were in your shoes, I would keep the RS40 for 2d blu ray and add a single chip DLP for 3d if you can make 2 projectors work in your setup. You will get the unbeatable native non DI JVC blacks for movies which is huge and for 3d you will get truly ghost/flicker free 3d which makes all the difference. You will get the best of both worlds. cool.gif

I was in your shoes a few months ago as I was deciding if I should trade in my X3 (RS40) for the Epson 5020 for the brightness levels, I decided to buy a Dalite 2.4 106" HP screen which made a huge difference on brightness without sacrificing blacks or shadow detail. I also just added a Epson 3020 for tv and 3D which has worked out perfect. I now have 2 projectors with a HP screen and the screen and 3020 cost me $600 less than buying the 5020.

If you can do 2 projectors I highly recommend it.

How can you go to a 2.4 gain HP screen in 106" size and not sacrifice black levels? Going to a small high gain screen, if optimizing the projector setup for the HP screen is going to sacrifice the black levels. The whites will be brighter and so will the blacks. Looking at around 23 FL in low lamp with the iris closed down. That is pretty bright if in a light controlled room. Also the OPer has his projector ceiling mounted, so an HP will not work for him. As for the HP, I am very familiar with it, having owned one (106" 16:9 2.8 gain) for many years.
