Ideas for a subwoofer under the theater

Hi all,

I can't be the first one to ask about this, but I can't find what I'm looking for. I'm having my theater built right now. I hadn't thought about the space underneath the seating area before i actually saw it framed up yesterday. Some quick calculations shows a volume of about 280 cubic ft of space under there that is essentially dead for me expect as possible storage accessed from the area behind the theater (the lawncare garage).

It occurred to me that this space might make an interesting place to build an infinite baffle sub that would not only supply bass to the theater, but have the dual effect of rocking the seats a bit during intense action.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here? Is there something I can easily make up to take advantage of some or all of this area?

BTW, I have the option of "venting" into the room anywhere through the platforms that make up the tri-level flooring if that matters.

Thanks,
Scoob

I've seen numerous articles in old SpeakerBuilder mags on hidden subs that vent in.

There are quite a few builds where people have used IB subs under the theater and I remember one where someone used some horns/horn in his riser.

The only problems "I" know are how the riser will act if it's not decoupled and the same goes with the subs you place in them.

May want to take a few pics, state some goals, and budget. I'm sure you'll get some input for different options.

Kinda restricts your placement too.....

You might want to experiment with a comventional sub at that location to see how it works there......

Also, do you like nearfield subs? I dont mind filler subs nearfield but the setups ive heard with exclusive nearfield subbage i didnt like it.

I prefer most of the bass to come from the front.

Not to discourage, im sure it will work and the aesthetics might outweigh the issues......

My original idea, before I saw the volume underneath, was to stick my second sub at that location - on the top and relatively close to the top row of seating.

I won't be discouraged, so keep the ideas rolling in.

I don't really have an idea about budget since this only came up last night. I have no idea what to even expect for the budget for this sort of project (or when i'll have it since this current project is draining most of what I have now).

I've attached the pdf with the current proposed layout with the sub up top with the back row of seats. The empty space beneath corresponds to the raised platforms on top: 16" tall for the middle row and 32" tall for the back row. Only studs down there and concrete floor. Theater.pdf 327k .pdf file

One vote for the subs in the risers...they'll need a little delay but that's easy.

Try to recess the equipment cabinet into a side or rear wall and eliminate the partial wall. A symmetrical room with seating further from the side walls will sound more balanced.

From what I've read today, it looks like my idea will work if I use probably 2 15" or 18" subs along with a good amp and an equalizer to kill off miscellaneous problems (Maybe two sets of these, depending on how ambitious I get). So probably a $600-800 minimum job and up to $2k. It will have to wait for awhile while I recover from the build we're doing now. I'll come back here when I'm ready to try it.
