Official AVS Coverage of Sony PS4 Launch Event

Credentials in hand, I anxiously await admittance to the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in NYC for what is widely expected to be the unveiling of the Playstation 4. The press credentials reveal nothing. The excitement is palpable as I wait in the lobby of the Hotel Ace with perhaps one hundred of my peers, filing first reports and making sure our gear is charged and ready.

The Playstation 3 established itself as the most sophisticated of the big three consoles. Between the Wii, X-box and PS3, only Sony included features that made their console a powerhouse movie playback machine. The PS3 remains the only console capable of playing Blu-rays. Hopefully tonight we will find out if the Playstation 4 continues this tradition, builds upon on it or perhaps Sony manages to surprise us with an innovation or two.

edit - Sony did not want to show or discuss the Playstation 4 hardware at their Playstation event on 2/20/13. They did want to show off the graphics it is capable of:

If you get a chance to ask some questions or talk to people who will... do hold Sony's feet to the fire re: UHD Blu-ray... if they added a BDXL drive to the PS4 units... has the BDA come up with a higher capacity disc based solution for state-of-the-art quality in both video and audio? Will they allow for Dolby Atmos and/or DTS Multi-Dimensional Audio (MDA) object-oriented soundtracks? And other A/V specs. you guys can glean would be most helpful.

Many of us still strongly feel that download-only or streaming-only schemes are quite premature given the state of the internet (haven't been impressed with one cloud based service yet) and storage space requirements for ultimate quality. A physical, high capacity disc is about the only realistic solution for high bit depth video (gotta get past 8 bit, 4:2:0!!), 4k resolution, higher progressive frame rates, full 4k 3D, 24 bit, bit-for-bit lossless object-oriented audio, etc.

Killing the used market and the ability to preview and share movie and game content is a big sticking point as well.

Sony shouldn't get a pass in the heat of all this excitement.

Thank you!

imagic if you get a chance please ask about 3d support for the system. See if it would support 1080p120fps, so we can get full hd 3d at 60fps for each eye.

Overheard: "Every year after this one, February 20th will be remembered as Playstation 4 day". In the lobby, planning on being among the first in line for seating. It sounds like they are testing the sound system, and specifically the subwoofers. Entry will be granted at 5:15

Unfortunately the early birds do not get the worm, they get kicked out onto the sidewalk. It's winter in Manhattan and there's nowhere to sit outside. Luckily B&H photo's superstore is right around the corner. I am in the store now, I inquiring about availability of Sony's 4K TV sets. The department manager told me they were already invoiced and are expected "soon". I am heading back in a few minutes, I can handle one hour in the cold for a good seat.

The event is at the Hammerstein ballroom, across the street from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan.

Well, that's the back of the Garden actually, so it's rather an avenue to the West, next to The New Yorker Hotel... it's a great concert venue, I like Hammerstein much more than the Garden, it's still human-scaled and they always sell all kind of booze right on both sides as you enter the main floor, usually all the way until the encore during concerts... =)
