Why did they invite AVS????

Well, that was a big waste of time... if you're not into gaming. Veeeeeeery little in the way of specifics of media features. There are more details in the leaked specs. than what was presented here.

And they really downplayed any physical media. Now, what are you supposed to do when the hard drive is packed, start deleting the games you already bought? Most of the advanced graphics will probably be in the form of cut scenes. To render an entire game at the level of graphics detail shown would take massive amounts of storage and take forever to download... and the processor would probably choke.

What a bunch of teases.

WHile it's disappointing it makes perfect sense not to reveal the specs you're planning to counter MS' new media center with especially when these are the parts that can be changed in weeks.

I'm sorry but I cannot put it nicer: you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Man it feels like they wasted your time

There is no discussion of hardware and specs. Nobody is allowed to answer questions. Frustrated, I went and talked to the projectionist. The one thing I could confirm is that we were looking at 4K on the main screen. The graphics looked distinctly better than the 1080p screens under them that were mirroring.

I do recall that one month ago Sony said they would not reveal hardware specs before Microsoft does. I thought they meant the whole system. It's clearer now.

rolleyes.gif Or you just need to move out of the sticks and get a decent connection... on my HTPC it played perfectly fine, in HD (looked like yesteryear's 720p Vimeo movies)...
I was able to get it to work better from gametrailers, but still a poor quality. Judging by the numerous other comments regarding losing connections, freezing, and buffering- I am not alone. I am also not "in the sticks". A LARGE number of gamers do not have strong bandwidths and it should be a legitimate concern if they want to push downloaded games.

It seems that the whole 4k chain (HDMI v2.0, 4k blu-ray etc) is still so much up in the air and yet to be worked out that neither Sony nor anyone else is in a position to make any worthwhile announcement at this time.
The big winners from this event are PC gamers.

Oh OK it was just a PS4 1.0 launch, still awesome though. Can't wait for launch 2.0! PS4 is real!biggrin.gif

Sony invited a hometheater related site but gave no hometheater related info.

Ok?
A bit of a let down really, I can't wait for some concrete specs!

Even with no information whatsoever, the event had its intended effect. I saw video games played live on a PS4 through a 4K projector on a full-sized movie screen, sitting in the front row... and everything looked flawless. The quality speaks for itself. Anyone who doubts the PS4 will be able to handle 4K for video and gaming is just plain wrong.

Good point Mark. 4k is much better and easier to do than many people believe, imo. smile.gif

I'm saying that the level of detail shown (like the Gollum-quality old man's face) could not be put in an entire game. Not with the hardware known to be included in the PS4. Cut scenes, yes. An entire game with Hollywood movie-like sophistication... no.

Those were real gamers playing real games at the presentation. Drive Club was especially amazing, modeled down to individual fibers in the fabrics. You are wrong about it bing cut-scenes only. And this is software and hardware that is still in development. My guess is I was watching proper 1080/60p rendering of video games, running through superior scaling algorithms.

*Specifications are subject to change without notice

If that's even a real Sony document

Here is the official Sony .pdf:

The info is real.

No BDXL drive in the specs., no mention of 2160p movie playback.

Sounds like a baby step towards the PS5, as I feared.

It sure didn't seem like that driving game had the photo realism of that old man. A human face is a lot different than a car in the complexity of the rendering and animation in real time. None of the other games had real game play at that level... just the cut scenes.

I am confused. Were you also there, in the same room with an actual PS4, watching world-class gamers demonstrate the graphic capabilities on a 4K projector? Or are you saying this based on watching a live stream from your computer?

The only game that featured disappointing graphics was Watch Dogs, it that had that current-generation look to it, including the telltale shimmer of alias artifacts. The rest of the games look exceptional.

The spec's are still subject to change, BD ROM read speeds are up to 12× on PC drive's. The specs on the PDF state only 6×

Not really impressed. The bad thing is if Xbox 720 were to be more powerful it won't matter because the low bar for a graphics powerhouse was just set. More least common denominator games.
Will Xbox go with blu ray or stay with 8 GB disc's? I can't believe Xbox will stay with 8gb disc's or come up with there own optical disc format

I think they will bite the bullet and support Sony's format. The format war is over this lanch period. They will need the disc space.

I'm the first one to spit on any console graphics but seriously: WTF are you talking about? Unless you were there you are almost blind-guessing based on some ******, awfully-compressed real-time streams on Ustream...

Imagic was there, he has a PC, he said it was pretty much on pair with a current high-end PC graphics. Granted, that bar is not too high nowadays, thanks to the LCD effect, as you correctly pointed out but still, this is the first time we see a yet-to-be launched console almost a year before its launch is already matching our desktop graphics... imagine what they will be able to do once they have the final hardware for a year or two and tweaked the hell out of it...

...that being said expecting another 7 years lifetime is just plain stupid, I'm telling you. This business moves WAAAY FASTER, there's no way Sony would survive with this HW until 2020, NO WAY, period.
I wasn't there, but developers said that their games were demoed on a PC at the event. Was an actual console spotted?

I did, however, notice that the game screens posted at Playstation Blog are in 4K UHD resolution, for what it's worth:

Those are accurate statements. Sony is not talking about hardware specifics yet. The optical drive is clearly not the focus of this system, predicting what the user wants and pre-downloading content in anticipation is the strategy Sony outlined repeatedly. They were very adamant that the new system will not suffer from extended load times. Official specs only mention a 6X BD player. I chatted up some of the Sony 'staff' and the consensus is the PS4 will gain BDXL capability as soon as the standards are worked out. Whether or not that happens before launch is an open question, but thanks to the inclusion of USB 3.0 adding a drive when they do become available is also not a problem.

Just pointing that out (demos running on PCs) since Mark H said he was in the room with "an actual PS4."

Spot on T2k. If Sony have any brains at all in this area they will introduce hardware upgrades to the PS4 at least on a yearly basis. Then current owners can decide if they want to upgrade or not and new would-be buyers can decide if the "latest" PS4 is worth buying.
Welcome back to the world of the PC. wink.gif
