The PS4 will ship by the end of the year. Its price is unknown, and the console has not yet been publicly shown. Here are the announced specs:

  • Main Processor: Single chip custom processor. CPU is an x86-64 AMD "Jaguar", 8 cores.

  • Graphic Processor: GPU is an AMD next-generation Radeon graphics engine rated at 1.84 teraflops with 18 unified Compute Units.

  • Memory: 8GB GDDR5 with 176GB/s bandwidth.

  • Hard Drive: Built-in

  • Optical Drive (read only): BD 6x CAV, DVD 8x CAV

  • I/O: Super-Speed USB 3.0, Aux (for PS4 Eye)

  • Communication: Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)

  • AV Output: HDMI, Analogue AV out, optical digital audio output

It comes with a new DualShock 4 controller and a headset. Move and a new PSEye with dual lenses have been confirmed.

Other known tidbits include not having PS3 compatability except through future streaming technology, you don't need to be online to use the PS4, and that the system will not block used games.

Below is a summary of what was announced at the PS4 unveiling conference.

PS4 games and tech info (Click to show)
- New console is named PlayStation 4

- Sony got input from dozens of developers when designing the PS4.

- Has 8 GB of GDDR5 memory (wow!) allowing 176 GB/second of bandwidth

- The CPU is a custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores

- The GPU is customized for the PS4. It contains a "unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate
1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two."

- DS4 controller same as rumored pics. It has reduced lag and better rumble tech. A dual lens PSEye camera detects your controller by a light bar on the back of the DS4. There is a Share button added as well.

- Knack, a new a family friendly platform action game starring a robot made up of many pieces is shown. Kinda like Ratchet and Clank.

- The PS4 allows you to save state like the Vita. It has a second chip to download stuff, even when it is off. DLoading new games allows you to play immediately while the rest dloads in the background.

- The PS4 auto records your game so you can cut a video at any time, edit it and send it to friends before getting back to the game.

- You can bring up your friend's game play live to watch on your screen, and choose to join if you wish. Smart phones and Vita can easily connect to the network to communicate and track what your friends are playing.

- The PS4 lets you instantly try out any PS4 game for free, and even play with friends. Awesome.

- There is a spectating feature on the PS4. Pressing the Share button on the controller lets you broadcast your game to friends, who can then communicate with you real time. If a game level is too tough for you, your online buddy can take over the controls through his PS4 and beat it for you.

- Remote play will be a major push for the Vita. Sony hints that almost any PS4 game can be played this way. They showed Knack on the Vita being streamed from PS4.

- Sony plans to stream almost all PS games from PSOne to PS3 on many devices like phones, PS4, etc. They will roll out PS Cloud support in phases.

- Developers discuss how important immediacy is for PS4. No wait time for loading a game before you can play if it was suspended, or waiting to play as you are downloading new content.

- Killzone Shadow Fall was announced. The demo showed detailed visuals, lots of reflections, smoke, shadow and light effects. Frame rate this early on is up and down. A ton of people walking around a city is shown. Explosion and chaos ensues. Death scenes shown, the. The KZ action then starts in real time. You can climb any ledge now it seems. Weapon effects are solid. Flying over the futuristic city looks fantastic.

- Driving Club is a team based driving game, club vs club. It rewards you for group play, even if not simultaneously, despite not being the best driver. There will be a ton of challenges to enjoy. Graphics are fantastic, but the cars are not real. I can't emphasize enough how incredible the detail is on the cars. The textures, lighting, etc are top tier. The driving is very smooth as the car races around the countryside looking for challengers.

- Sucker Punch's game is called inFamous: Second Son. The world has police monitoring everywhere through cameras. Once again, chaos ensues. Super heroes and villains go at it. Awesome premise from what was shown.

- Braid developer appeared with a title to debut on the PS4: The Witness. His game is open world, but he says his game will be dense with detail and relevance. There is an idea to convey with every puzzle you solve during 25 hours of gameplay. The adventure takes place in your mind more than the display he said. It has nice, colorful 3D graphics. Relaxing music. It takes place on an island.

- The Heavy Rain developer talked about conveying emotion through games and uses movies as examples. He says PS4 allows this to be possible in games with its realistic visuals. A brief demo showed the most realistic human models ever to appear on a console. If his next game looks that good....

- LittleBigPlanet developer talked about new way to share games by recording "your dreams", and that the Move controller works with the PS4. He shows demo of artist sculpting art creations with the Move to make it easy to make models so people don't need to use complex art techniques. Another demo that played was of a dance scene with characters controlled by the Move on PS4. A guy then plays guitar while others play drums and keyboards, all. With the Move. Kind of like a simplified Rock Band.

- Capcom's developer talks about their new game engine. It is called Panta Rhei for some strange reason.

- He then shows a demo of Deep Down. It looks like a medieval action adventure in the Demons' Souls / Dragon's Dogma vein. There is a stunning dragon battle with the hero. It has amazing effects and monster models.

- Square-Enix discusses their Luminous engine. They show the same gorgeous Agni demo from awhile back, but says it is running on the PS4. A Final Fantasy game will be announced at E3.

- Watch Dogs developer from Ubisoft took the stage. He said how city events are remotely controlled in the game by you as well as your ability to hack into individuals. The demo starts with a nice looking daytime city scene. Your character wanders around prying into their thoughts with his tech. Very interesting premise. You see a target and eavesdrop. Stops a crime, chases bad guy through city. Nice animations. Police chase allows you to bullet time tires on their cars. You slow down a subway so you can hop on and escape. Then hack a security camera that sees you to scramble transmission. Looks like a fun game!

- Diablo 3 announced for PS4 and PS3. PAX East will reveal the first playable look at the ports.

- Bungie's Destiny is demo'd. A lot of new stuff is shown not in the announcement video. Developer says exclusive Destiny content is coming to both PS4 and PS3.

8GB 176GB/s Unified memory

I'm not sure how they pulled that off after rumors of 2GB and 4GB, but nice.

5 years from now, we'll be glad they did. If it really was a last minute upgrade, none of the games we've seen even begin to take advantage of it.

Exactly.

I'm a little underwhelmed.

No price
No exact date
No actual images of the console itself!!!!

Way drawn out for what they showed.

They focused on games the entire time. I am more than satisfied.

The first post now has a summary of the notes I posted in the conference thread. If I missed anything important, let me know.

The idea was to show off the developers that they have lined up to work with them on this, and the basics of the hardware in the system. Also wanted to show off their social networking integration. All of this so that Microsoft is now forced to up them when they make their announcement later on. After that, Sony will then go and release further information at E3 and be able to counter what MS comes out with.

It's all a game of media poker, so to speak. Make your bet, see what your opponent does, then re-raise him if he raises you.

Not everyone cares about social networking. I spend 0% of my time on Facebook or Twitter. 0. I've never seen a Twitter page, ever. I could be wrong, but I've always considered the PS3 to be the grown-up's system. I've always considered the 360 what the kids play. I do realize there is a big youth (or youth-minded) community on the PS3, I've been on Home, but I still have always thought we have a more mature audience on the PS3. I don't really know if a lot of people are going to care much about having Facebook integration.

I FULLY agree. I HATE Facebook and all that social stuff with a passion. I am hoping that you will not be required to have some type of Facebook account in order to make use of some of the features. I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to go without it though. There are reasons to keep anonymity out there. (I'm guessing that your real name will only be shown to people on your friends list).
Its just a feature. You don't have to use those features but its great they have all of that out there if you want to.

I hope you are right Jamieva. I am seeing more and more websites and applications that say "Log in with your Facebook account". No way.

Some details, but not as much as I'd hoped for. I'd like to know about pricing, firm release date, and additional details ie media streaming capabilities, ssd storage, ir remote support.

There's one I didn't think about. Would be nice to be able to use my Harmony remotes without a $40-$50 Logitech interpreter.

My hope is they build it out of the PSN, and only allow you to link it and access it through facebook, mobile web, ect. If you start thinking about it as leaderboards, clans, forums, stat tracking, detailed profiles, ect... there's A LOT they can do in a gaming centric way that is very useful to most of us.

Think the promise of home, but actually done right.

Sounds impressive! Any mention of 4k support?

Not during the presentation. I don't think there are enough televisions out there which support 4k resolution items at this point in time to make it something that would warrant an announcement yet. (I believe that when the PS3 first came out and the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war was going on, HDTVs were widely distributed already. Also, the war was still going on and I think Sony's PS3 announcement of the Blu-Ray drive kind of helped end that "war").

-Through PS4, users are able to deepen their connections through co-op play or “cross-game chat”. As expected.

-Additionally, users can boot a variety of applications including a web browser when playing a game on PS4. Neat, although even a Vita can do this nowadays.

I tip my hat to Sony. That PS4 reveal was a hell of a lot better than the PS3 IMO. They showed playable games instead of target renders like that infamous one for KZ2. I also applaud them for using more standardized hardware instead of going with some esoteric architecture disaster the Cell turned out to be. Sony sunk a fortune to into creating it and it wasn't exactly easy to make make games for it. The Cell unit was long ago jettisoned by the company. Also, 8GB of DDR5? Nice!

I think Sony also did a good job of subtly hyping up their Vita. I foresee a lot of people going out and getting a Vita or two in anticipation of using it on/with their PS4.

I'm one of those people. Between that and all the free games for it on ps+, I would get my money out of it.

Thanks and you have some great points.

Was also curious about the reduced lag detail as far as the DS4 controller. Is lag an issue with the DS3? I have not noticed any lag issues, but I am not super sensitive to lag in general.

Between remote play, one button off/on gaming, and transferring sessions between devices'; it's going to make some gaming dad's out there very happy. Wife or kids need the TV? Commuting to work? Baby had a blowout?

Sonys got you covered!

Lag isnt an issue with the DS3, but I'm all for them striving to improve it in every way.

So does anyone want to fathom a guess as to price?

I'm going to say $450 for the tiny HDD / non included eye version, which will put it at the inflation adjusted price of the original Playstation ($300 in 1994, $450 in 2012 dollars)

Which is more than reasonable if these specs are final IMO. Smartphones are being sold for $500-700 MSRP after all.

Yes but most people dont pay MSRP for phones. They get one for a couple hundred or less with a plan from a cell provider. I paid $250 for a Galazy S3 a week after it was released.

Those extra 4GB of RAM really tilt me towards $450, although there's still the possibility Sony just eats the cost for a while.

And you end up paying more for it by being tied down to a 2 year contract (~$2500+ in future charges) and shelling out overpriced warranty and damage coverage. Just cause it's over 2 years doesn't mean you're not paying for that discount. They don't do it that way just out of the kindness of their hearts.

More and more people are finding it cheaper and smarter (if you like upgrading) to ditch the discounts and just go with pay as you go providers, or monthly plans. In the long run, you save some serious cash.
