Forgive my noobness with the tech jargon, but does anything you guys have seen point to any upgrades in the bluray capabilities?

More and more people are finding it cheaper and smarter (if you like upgrading) to ditch the discounts and just go with pay as you go providers, or monthly plans. In the long run, you save some serious cash.

Touche.

The drive is 6x, and with all that processing power, I bet it'll load movies crazy fast and have an ultra responsive UI. I think its pretty safe to assume it'll upscale to 4K, but thats kind of pointless, since a 4K TV can do that anyway. 3D, HD Audio, etc...all of that goes without saying.

I wonder if the chipset supports HEVC/h.265 decoding....that would make native 4K video a lot more realistic.

Having just watched the 2 hour long event, I felt the presentation was way too drawn out for what little information was revealed about the PS4. Having said that, I was quite impressed with what I saw when it came to graphics. The video of the old man looked incredible. I'm quite excited about seeing the capabilities of the next generation consoles. I'm extremely happy with the announcement of 8 gigs of memory. The new PS4 controller looked cool. I really wasn't expecting Sony to reveal that much but I thought they would at least give a sneak peak of what the console will look like. I imagine Sony is waiting for E3 to reveal much more.

As for the features, I don't really care one bit about all the social media networking. Another thing I thought was silly was the feature of being able to take over a friends game remotely and help your friend in a game where they are having difficulty.

I'm disappointed there will be no backwards capability for playing PS3 games. I know Sony didn't mention much, but I believe what Sony has planned is having old PS3 titles available on their newly acquired streaming service and charge to stream the game. Speaking of streaming, I hope that's not the future. The U.S. lags way behind with broadband speeds and with basically every ISP having a data cap, I see many issues.

For the unanswered questions, I really hope the PS4 has a 1TB hard drive. I'm guessing Sony could release 2 models: a 500GB and a 1TB PS4 model. I think there is a possibility of a PS Vita and PS4 bundle. Sony seems to be trying to push the Vita as much as they can. My guess on price is $400 for a base PS4 and $500-$550 for a bigger hard drive and the new sensor for the controller.

Regardless of what the console looks like, the PS4 will be a day one purchase for me.

Hey joe, you forgot to mention that backwards compatibility will come from the "cloud".
Aka the games for ps1, ps2, ps3 run on remote servers and send to your x86 PS4 over the net in realtime.

That's hard to fathom.

They better upgrade broadband around the US asap.

That also solves the used games problem. People have to buy "cloud" versions instead of disk copied versions.
Another thing I hope is that the HDD format is not FAT32 anymore. I hate the file-size cap as it makes the movies I copy to my PS3 hard drive in need of being heavily compressed, or split into multiple portions in order to copy over and play.

Was also curious about the reduced lag detail as far as the DS4 controller. Is lag an issue with the DS3? I have not noticed any lag issues, but I am not super sensitive to lag in general.

Six axis controls have lag. Maybe they are referring to that.

As long as I finish The Last of Us before the launch, I will be one of those that won't care about lack of BC in the PS4.

Oh good, they got SCE on board. I was worried they were going to be xbox exclusive.

My most anticipated game of the year is GTA 5, I wonder if there will be a PS4 version? I'm not holding on to a current gen console just for one game (have no spare HDMI ports anyway) so, if Rockstar wants to make as much money as possible, they better have versions of GTA 5 that can run on the PS4 and the next Xbox.

Here is the DualShock 4:

Quote:

Hi Everyone! It’s a special day at PlayStation, and I hope all of you had a chance to watch the livestream of PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York, where we just unveiled PlayStation 4. One of the most exciting components of our next-generation platform is DUALSHOCK 4, the new wireless controller that combines with PlayStation 4 to deliver new gameplay experiences that have never been possible before.

DUALSHOCK 4

I’d like to give you a tour of DUALSHOCK 4 and the features that will provide game developers the freedom to create brand new experiences that previously were limited to their imaginations.

Design

DUALSHOCK 4 adopts the familiar form factor of the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with some key enhancements:

  • Motion control is enabled by a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor
  • Dual analog sticks fine-tuned for better precision plus improved surface materials and shape for more delicate manipulation
  • L2/R2 buttons on the top of the controller employ a curved design for easier, smoother interaction
  • A new “Options” button combines the functions of the DUALSHOCK 3’s “Select” and “Start” buttons for operating in-game menus

New Ways to Play, Share and Connect

In addition to these features that build on the controls that you already know, DUALSHOCK 4 offers new features that enable new ways to play, a key part of the PS4 experience. One of the biggest innovations we’ve designed centers on the deep social interactions that will surround all games on PS4.

DUALSHOCK 4

DUALSHOCK 4DUALSHOCK 4

The “Share” button allows you to easily broadcast your gameplay in real-time through streaming sites such as Ustream, where fellow gamers can comment and even join your game in new ways. For example, if you’re stuck in a difficult level, your friends can offer health potions or special weapons that you can use during gameplay. You can also instantly upload images or video to Facebook by pressing the “Share” button. As both a developer and a gamer, I’m personally excited about the opportunity to get help from friends when facing a challenge, and I can’t wait to see what my friends are playing in real time along with videos of their favorite in-game moments.

On the front side of DUALSHOCK 4 is a light bar with LED that illuminate in various colors to match the color of the character in a game as a simple way to identify players. The colors can also provide useful information to players, such as when their character has taken damage during a game. DUALSHOCK 4 was developed alongside a second peripheral, a dual camera which can sense the depth of the environment in front of it and also track the 3D location of the controller via its light bar. The new camera incorporates four microphones capable of accurate sound detection and source origination, and it will support the PlayStation Move motion controller with more precision than ever before.

DUALSHOCK 4 also has a touchpad at the front of the controller as a new input method, offering more ways to interact with games. Additionally there’s a built-in speaker and headset jack to deliver high-fidelity sound effects from the games. A headset will be bundled with PS4, enabling gamers to chat with friends during online gaming and to hear sound effects from the controller.

There’s a lot built into DUALSHOCK 4, and the features were all thoughtfully designed with input from the development community (both our internal studios and third parties) and PlayStation gamers. Our goal was to give game creators an open canvas to express their ideas, and DUALSHOCK 4 combined with DUALSHOCK 4 will help us achieve the future of gaming that we at PlayStation see ahead of us.

Stunning graphics are possible on the PS4 based on this Old Man demo from Quantic Dreams:

This is not a problem for the internal drive, only an external drive plugged into the PS3.

Considering this is a new system with new games coming, this news actually excites me.

There are two PS2 games that I really want to play again that I can't do now with the newer PS3 model and I can't see myself buying another PS2 system just to play these games.

Now, I just hope these two are actually included as the note says "almost all".

I tend not to believe it when they say say it was running "realtime on PS4 hardware". They said the same thing about Watch Dogs and then the Ubisoft guys admitted afterwards it was running on a PC with "similar specs" as a PS4.

Well, think of it this way. In 2005, Sony revealed this tech demo to show off what the PS3 would be capable of when released the following year:

Now, we've seen the PS3 surpass that in titles like Heavy Rain and the upcoming The Last of Us and Two Souls: Beyond. If Quantic Dream says they can achieve PS4 visuals on par with the Old Man tech demo, I believe them.

To be fair, this is because real PS4s probably don't even exist yet.

The PC they are running it off of is likely a development kit of some sort with the same AMD hardware as the PS4, with more (and slower) RAM and a Linux OS.

They also said that about a lot of the stuff they showed at the PS3 announcement, which turned out to be false as well. Sony's been known to bend the true a little at these events (they all due) and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I hope they were playing this one pretty straight because I'm impressed. I love the idea of playing a game as it downloads and being able to demo every game. Gonna be hard for MS to top this IMO, especially if MS comes out focused on Kinect crapware with the next Xbox like they have been the past year or 2.

I currently only have a 360, got rid of my PS3 years ago and there are times I have missed it. I love the 360 and Xbox Live but, I have a few really good friends (as in actual friends I know in person) who only have PS3s so, I'm probably going to go with a PS4 if they do as well so we can all game together. Probably will not get both consoles this time, especially if they both come out this year.
That is if your friends also get PS4s. With no backward compatibility, you may very well be on your own. wink.gif

I am really excited to see what Naughty Dog can do with the system. They squeezed some amazing graphics out of the PS3, so imagine what they can do on the PS4.

It was a different culture back then with different leadership. Sony didn't really bend the truth with the Vita, for example.

A lot of people point to the Killzone 2 CG as Sony's overreaching, but the final game looked damn close to that - better in some ways. No, the hardware didn't have dual HDMI or output in 1080p with every game but it was pretty capable. And Sony didn't seem to make any claims of that sort with PS4. They even went so far as to downplay certain things, like streaming old games.

PS4 4K Video support but not games

There you go for those who asked. So there will be no 4k gaming on the PS4.

That's not the issue. A single floating head floating in empty space says very little about what a console can actually do in action.

Showing tech demos at this event was a waste of the limelight. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Should have confined the event to just that first hour and left everything else to the post-event interviews. Or else used that second hour for something else.

It was great to see those few games get highlighted. Very impressed. Impressed enough to get a console at launch? No.

I actually thought that was one of the more poignant moments. That demo wasnt about graphics, it was about storytelling. Faces we can actually believe is going to be the single biggest paradigm shift in the coming years. LA Noire and Enslaved aside, the current gen has faces about as expressive as muppets.

Keep in mind that while there will be no games displayed at that resolution, there will be games displayed at 1080P @60 fps in 3D. As I've been saying, that is only possible if the console supports 4K. You'll need a 4K HDTV to benefit from this however.

I'm so hyped about PS4, so many great things about this conference:

- The fact they're focusing more on gaming than ever instead of gimmicky HT features is a huge + in my book being a hardcore video gamer, that's what made PS1 and PS2 the amazing consoles they are, games.
- 8GB GDD-freaking-R5 RAM? Enough said.
- I really liked the fine tunes they've done to the dual shock, pretty much exactly what I wanted, i.e no radical changes but the small tweaks seem will make an almost perfect controller pretty much Perfect! Specially the slightly curved edges that seem will make the controller more comfortable, I just have to try it out in my hands first to make my final judgement, but so far so damn good.
- Watch dogs has potential to be a great game.
- Easy to develop for architecture, this is very very important, so many complained about how difficult it was to unlock PS3's potential.
- I'm a bit skeptical about the whole no more load time and instantly play digital downloaded games, but I'd be more than satisfied if they were able to achieve anything really close to that.
- Q4 2013 release date? Yes please. I hope Sony realized that it was a mistake to not meet a promised released date like what happened with the PS3, hopefully they'll be able to make it this time around, if such date is before Xbox's next gen console, it would be a huge + for Sony.

Hopefully developers will be able to push the system to it's limits and provide us with truly breath taking video game experiences, specially if possible with 60fps @ true 1080p. I have faith in developers like the Final Fantasy team or Kojima Productions will be able to achieve and surpass such goals.

I'm kind of glad that not everything was shown at this event, because we all know when's the best time to shine and show off everything you've got against your competition >>>> E3 !!!!!

I literally can't wait for E3 this year, MGS being my all time favorite game series Kojima will probably rock the house showing off what his Fox Engine is capable of there!

They were good with the unique architecture of the PS3. Think about all the other devs that are used to x86. No matter which system comes out more powerful, all devs are going to love this generation I think.

well it will havea faster bluray drive and i think be able to read higher capacity discs id guess for gaming.

but it will be able to play 4k video. i guess visa sonys 4k movie download platform and other future services since they have yet to finalise a 4k bluray standard just yet.
