Both Sony and Microsoft have to be out by Black Friday. Then again, if meeting demand on either side is difficult it may not matter.

I'm not sure what the expected launch (not launch window) offerings will be yet, is there a list?

I want Watch Dogs, The Division.. not sure what else yet. As much as I liked KZ2, KZ3 left a sour taste in my mouth for single player and I haven't been convinced yet for the new one coming. I want Motorstorm frown.gif

I wonder if Sony puts out incentives for company's that put out games by launch or close to it considering the install base is so small initially.

The Division isn't coming out until 2014, if Wikipedia is right Q4 2014.

Now that is actually an interesting statement. Either their web design team took a guess or someone forgot they couldn't say that...

Still holding out hope that October 29th is the date, but November 11th is looking more likely.

I think Sony is protecting our interests. They went and put a headlight on our controller for locating beer cans in a darkened room! Huzzah no more back light for me. smile.gif

Gads this submit button is the bane of my existence today. Keeps leaping under my finger.

Meant to say:

(Spoken in carny announcer voice) As seen on TV folks, amaze your friends and family with the wonders of your PS4 headlight! Let them marvel at the power of illumination of the nether regions of you coffee table! Step right up!

Sony Santa Monica (God of War) is rumored to be deep in development of a next gen IP. They, along with the playstation facebook page, just posted this to facebook/twitter:

Some interesting stuff about the advantage of next gen's shared memory compared to PCs.

This however was the most interesting and confusing to me:
Quote:
If it’s weird hearing Nvidia saying somewhat positive things about consoles powered by its rival, consider that AMD’s inclusion in consoles can benefit the general PC-gaming industry, not just AMD. Both Microsoft and Sony have announced that their consoles will support the industry-standard DirectX 11 programming language.

“If you’re truly writing Xbox One games to DirectX, I don’t know why AMD would necessarily gain an advantage over Nvidia, and I don’t know why developers would write anything [AMD] proprietary to their console games,” Moorhead says.

Is that just plain false information? DirectX is owned by MS, when the hell was it confirmed that Sony got the license to use it?! I'd personally like that so Multiplatform games would be more alike and the transition to PCs will be even easier, but I don't think it's right since this is the first time I heard this.

Yeah, it's false. I think it was Cerny that said that developers would use suse an API very similar but enhanced so that there is really nothing they have to learn to get stuff working on the console. It'll pretty much have the same capabilities along with some extra custom stuff for the PS4.

Wasn't PCWorld the same rag that reported on how to "build a next gen console now"?

Yeah, they should stick to PC because it seems they really don't know what they're talking about. PS4, like PS3, is using a BSD iterative operating system and PSGL/libGCM. OpenGL offers DX11.1 like capabilities and I've read it's pretty easy to switch code between the two in wrappers, but it's not the same.

DX is a Windows API and you need to be running windows to use it. They should know that.

November 3rd... that is a Sunday.... Possible

That date would screw over everyone who preordered from Amazon.

My Birthday is the 2nd. Sounds like a nice present.

Interesting idea, but the much more plausible explanation (seeing as SSM is also teasing it) is a new IP announcement. Sonys got quite a few new IP's they haven't announced yet, but say are WIP's.

The light on the DS4 is a bit of a concern for me, in regards to playing in my theater room. The little light on the Xbox 360 controller always kinda annoyed me when I was in a dark room playing. It's very difficult to not notice it out of your peripheral vision. I thought about putting some tape over it or something, but never did.

I'll have to see how bad it is with the DS4. You'd think that if you don't have the PS4 eye you would be able to disable the light, but I guess not.

You didn't read the article above? It's a developer decision to use the lightbar or not. Presumably, it'll be on for a purpose. That also suggests that for movie watching (and maybe app use in general), it will be off. If not, no doubt it can be off by default with a firmware update if there is enough fuss so only programs that actively use it will have it on.

From Cerny's develop conference talk
Quote:
During his keynote presentation at the Develop Conference in Brighton this morning, PS4 chief architect Mark Cerny predicted a "renaissance of gaming", fuelled by indie titles, that will echo the early years of PlayStation.

"With PSone there was no way to make an indie title," he said. "The hardware didn't support digital downloads and all games were distributed on CD-ROMS. There was no way for creators to directly reach their audience.

...

"With the release of PlayStation 4, we understand we have an opportunity to fundamentally alter the landscape of gaming," Cerny continued.

"On PS4, I believe the indie paradigm will have the hardware as enabler, not as the central player, which is to say that Octodad isn't about the triangle count, it's about keeping your cephalopod nature a secret from your human family."

"On the business side, we've had a bit of an epiphany," Cerny said. "Since Adam Boyes joined SCE, pretty much the whole process has been overturned. He wanted us to look at the day in the life of an indie developer, and challenged us to explain whether our processes were helping or hindering the creation of the diverse titles we were looking for.

"We ended up radically simplifying concept approval. We fully support self-publishing across all platforms, so it's now possible for developers to maintain complete creative and financial control. We now pretty much support any business model, whether it be buy-to-play, free-to-play, episodic or micro-transactions. And we're doing what we can to support indie development financially as well, whether that be through loaner dev kits or our incubation program or direct support from the Pub Fund.

"We also understand that accessibility is paramount. So we've gone from putting our process out front to putting people out front, which is to say your indie journey on PS4 as a developer begins by tweeting Shahid Ahmad, not by filling out a form."

Music to my ears. Consoles have always been content providers that allowed game publishers to connect to game consumers. In the digital era, and a era where games take so much to make in time and monies; seems smart to leverage Indy and Homebrew Apps on your content delivery device.

This is exactly what Amazon, Android, and Apple do with their marketplaces. Let smart, inquisitive people have the tools to make great content experiences and take a small cut for being the gateway to customers. Break down the walls and get out of the way, because you can make a killing doing so. yes, you still need to ensure some QA, but for the most part keeping barrier to entry high really doesn't do anything for consumers or the majority of publishers and dev's besides drive costs and prices higher.

Looks like it very well could be a new next-gen entry into the Ratchet & Clank series based on hints by Insomniac Games' developer who also said on twitter that they'll announce something on Friday.

That would be awesome; their last traditional release, R&C:ACiT was perhaps the most under rated PS3 game this gen. I absolutely loved it and would enjoy playing a sequel with CGI quality visuals. Updated pic by IG:
