To be fair a lot of the lead is because of the DRM disaster. I imagine the numbers will shift a bit more once we get closer to launch and post-launch. Hell they base their numbers on June polling, the time closest to the disaster. I feel the PS4 will still get out to an early lead but I also feel many are overestimating the negativity regarding the One. When boots hit the ground I think a lot of the complainers and naysayers will cave and get one. It's not like we don't have numerous game boycotts to draw from.

I agree, though I think if the DRM was kept in place a lot of former 360 only would simply go the PS4 route.

No doubt and who knows they may still. While it can be said that at least MS is listening with their changes it can equally be said that it all seems like crocodile tears. Sony has seemed very genuine in their desire to make their system as gamer friendly as possible and the more MS has to backtrack and change policies the better Sony looks for not going that route in the first place. I like MS but man sometimes they can be their own worst enemy. Sony seems very focused this time around. I can't wait to see what PSN has in store.

The decoding might not soak up resources, but the actual display of the video itself will take up some resources that a game would otherwise expect to be there. Not to mention the game itself might need the video decoder for its own purposes.

They could do it if they really, really wanted to, it all depends how much resources they're willing to set aside from games. They would basically have to support the kind of side by side movie and game playback that the X1 does, and all indications are that they're not.

Which is fine by me. I want as much of the hardware dedicated to gaming as possible.

Microsoft did a 180 on Indie games and self pub as well according to IGN today. Numero uno reason I have a PS4 on preorder is the gd waffling Microsoft is doing. Who knows what the final product will be. I anticipate a near disaster for the xbone at launch. Sony does seem very comfortable. Maybe their good at hiding problems but I have a feeling Sony thought this one through and have their ducks in a row.

Now all they need to do is offer cross-buy between PC and X1 (and maybe even windows phone), and they've just sold me a whole mess of indie games.

Yeah, if my idea requires extra gaming resources not currently allocated for multimedia tasks, forget about it.

That sounds a lot like Android development to me.

Yea, just what we need, a lot of farting games clogging up our consoles.

That's why I don't care about Indie games. The few that are good are not worth the many that are not. On the flip side a nice surround sound with deep bass could get some interesting reactions at parties. eek.gif

Just picked up a Vita for my son's birthday. I am super impressed with this little thing! I was debating on getting him an ipod, but I am sick of touch screen only controls - it's nice to have something tactile like a joystick and buttons. Also, with the remote play on the PS4 (which is why I'm posting in this thread), we will be able to play ps4 games anywhere. The interface is really slick, the screen is huge (relative to an ipod) and crystal clear, and the only game I bought so far (Rayman) looks amazing. Apparently there are going to be 38 games released this year for the system. For the price, it's a no brainer for me. I'm hoping they also find cool ways to use it with the PS4. I'm sure they have, but I just got this thing and haven't really looked into it yet. Super stoked...for my son. Yeah.

Regarding the comment about indie games, I have been really impressed with some of the offerings on the iPhone. Soosiz is seriously one of my favourite platformers ever. I hope they release an HD version for the Vita. Battleheart also rocks so much. So it is possible for indie games to be great. You just have to wait for reviews, I guess.

blastermaster,
If you haven't already done so, picking up a year of Plus might be a wise choice since their are some good free PS Vita games in it and you get discounts on some others. As for cool ways to use it besides as a second mirrored screen, I'm expecting you'll see more games work like it does with the Wii U in which you can see a map, etc on the PS Vita's screen.

Just a quick thing, I'm pretty sure remote play of PS4 games needs to be done over WiFi. There might be a way to fiddle your router and send out over the internet, but it's really only meant for local play (I think). Gakai is their cloud, over the net based system for gaming. I'm guessing that will make it's way to PSV's.

As for the PSV, if you have plus already, start downloading. Plus has put up just about as many free Vita games, as they have PS3 games. PSN titles also come with a the vita version for one purchase if they have both, including those PSN plus freebies.

I also just caught this preview of Killzone: Mercenaries, and I do have to say it looks pretty impressive for a handheld. I want to hear more about remote play myself, but if it lives up to what it sounds like, I might be heading to craigslist to grab a PSV myself.

It'll probably take a day or two for people to figure it out. It will be nearly unplayable over anything but another wifi connection though, even though LTE can have wifi-like bandwidth, the latency is still pretty awful. Your experience will be almost entirely determined by your home upload bandwidth. Anything less than 5mbps up will probably look like trash.

I just mean from the standpoint that anyone can create something on their own device and toss it on the store. I'm sure it won't be as open. Wonder how locked down it will be...

Sony has announced it will begin hosting quarterly indie developer events at its London offices later this year.

Develop reports that the events will be used as an opportunity to update developers about what changes are coming to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita platforms, as well as get feedback about the state of the PSN.

Though it'll be targeted at European developers due to the location, Sony has confirmed that the development community from around the world will be welcome should they wish to attend. There's no firm start date for the scheme, though if things can be organised in time there's a chance it may kick off in September.

We are seeing incredible numbers of new companies coming to the platform.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe senior account manager Agostino Simonetta explained, "You know we do these things very regularly with all our partners, but with the indie community, it is so vast and they are spread out, that it is hard for me to go and work with developer days in the Middle East.

"So while we do these things, we want to make sure it is that on a regular basis. With the great success we are having actually of indie developers registering, we are seeing incredible numbers of new companies coming to the platform. There is a real sense that PS4 - and Vita as well, PS3 still has a long life - that this is a great opportunity for them to come back to console.

"We are really accelerating and changing the way we approach this. So before was more of a narrow cast, now there is a real opportunity for us to go what I call broadcast - a lot more visibility to be able to answer the questions."

Regarding why Sony has decided now is the time to start the venture, Simonetta explained the huge influx of interest from indie developers warranted recognition.

"I can tell you I have been there for four years, and one of my colleagues has been in third-party relations for ten years, and we've never seen anything like this. And this is not just PS4, it applies to Vita and PS3 as well," he said.

I hope I'm not the only one that's getting a bit tired hearing about how suddenly important indies are. I'm a bit tired of the love fest personally. I guess I'm just so used to Steam that to me I don't really care what consoles they end up on.

I just bought a PS Plus membership and...holy crap it's Christmas! I immediately downloaded Uncharted and tested it out. Wow it's crazy awesome on this little handheld!

i like it, one of my favorite games of last gen was braid, more indies can't be a bad thing... most of my gaming is console..

Well to be honest I don't consider a game like Braid an "indie" game. Same with FEZ. These games had pretty good marketing and exposure. I guess in the purist sense these were indie games but when I think of indies I think of the stuff we get on the indie channel. Dishwasher: Dead Samurai, Carnivale, etc. Those sort of games. If a game makes it to XBLA to me it's not an indie anymore. Maybe my view of what constitutes an indie is skewed based on experience.

understandable, but your definition of indie is not what the industries definition of indie is, bot fez and braids creators next games are still considered indie, even minecrafts next game is still considered indie, so that is why you are seeing all the "press" on indie games, because those games/people are a big deal...

No doubt, still unless they plan on allowing every Tom, Dick, and Harry to self publish and allow achievements in their games there will be that distinction and that can't be argued. Is Sony allowing self publishing indies to include trophy support? If so that's great, if not then it seems to me there will still be a distinction between what a true indie is and what Sony and MS want you to believe it is.
