My favorite part was

Quote:
People DO understand that Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers IN THE WORLD. We CREATED DirectX, the standard APIs that everyone programs against. So while people laude Sony for their [hardware] skills, do you really think we dont know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way were giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference it would be obvious."

Basically,.. No mater what the hardware gap their software skills can compensate.... That is super damage control. Makes me feel better and better about my change of brand. I could actually look past the hardware advantages but the lying in the face of facts is what drives me away.

I wouldn't quite call it lying. What he's saying isn't untrue, or even really that dishonest. He's just carefully choosing his words, like marketing is supposed to.

What he's saying is "specs don't tell the whole story" - definitely true. What people are hearing are "specs are meaningless" - NOT true. Just because you don't have 100% certainty, doesn't mean you're completely in the dark.

He says: "optimization can close the gap" - true. People hear: "optimization can *entirely* close the gap" - NOT true. Also ignoring the fact that Sony will be optimizing like crazy too, so it cancels out.

He says "both will put out games that look great" - true. People hear "the games will look the same" - not necessarily true. These are carefully chosen relative statements. A difference that's "obvious" to one person can be insignificant to someone else.

The most telling thing is that these are reactive and defensive statements that are intended to dismiss the criticisms. It's not a more proactive "let us show you how we'll blow them away". Sony doesnt have to be so cagey, because they know they have the upper hand. Both marketing departments are doing the best they can - if the tables were turned, and Sony had the weaker system, you'd be hearing about number of teraflops from MS and number of transistors from Sony.

I don't subscribe to a difference between Spin and lying and I'll call it whoever makes it.
Intentionally misleading comments still count as lying in my book and if that's what they need to do to sell consoles its too bad. They were better off not commenting at all.

Has there been any official "Next Gen" gameplay videos released ? I'm not talking about games running on dev kits, but actual game in the retail version console gameplay.

If not, is this typical for a new console release ? Or do you think the actual gameplay of these new consoles is going to be lackluster out of the gate and Msoft and Sony don't want to hurt initial sales ?

I've had every Playstation since the OG, but I've never been able to purchase a launch console until now, therefore I haven't really paid that much attention to previous launches. So maybe this is standard practice ?
True dev kits are using the same retail hardware that we will get. (Later they will get more RAM for the dev software) Test kits are retail form factor consoles that can run dev code, this is what was at E3 and Gamescom.

A dev PC is just a PC version of the game, this was seen at E3 in third party booths. All Battlefield 4 footage has been on PCs as has all Call of Duty footage.

PS2 / PS3 they went with target CGI which ended up being misleading (But I'd still argue KZ2 met and went beyond their target in most areas outside animation). At least with PS4 sony seems to have learned the lesson there and all first part stuff shown so far has been running code on dev kits or retail kits.

So far games like KZ:SF, Infamous, and Driveclub have only shown improvements from their E3 reveals as we've gotten closer to launch; so I don't think it's just fluff this time. Seems this time sony is actually going to be ready for launch.

3rd party is much harder to tell, and they're still using all the old tricks up their sleeves. As said above games like BF4/COD/Watchdogs have yet to be demo'd on console hardware afaik.

I think some game may impress a bit earlier this generation, but typically it take 12-18 months to really get "into" next gen. Especially with 3rd parties that are focusing on cross gen games and multiple platforms.

Out of the launch titles I'm only going to be getting BF4 ( I already paid for it ). I'm curious what it's going to look like on PS4. I guess we won't know until Nov. 15 ?

I guess what I really want to see is someone unboxing a retail PS4 and play a couple games to see what it's actually going to look like.

That may not happen until November. We should see more of Driveclub in late October once it goes gold, the Gamescom footage was still pretty old when it was shown. Fingers crossed on 60fps.

Yeah, if I spin stuff to my wife well, lets just say she doesn't buy my Xbone for a long time, no matter what exclusives I promise.

Lying is lying. The more I read on neogaf about the different reasons on why M$ is wrong, the more my ship jumping becomes validated.

Still, I'm going to miss that thing. There are a bunch of PS3 games that I never fully finished playing that I'm going to regret not finishing. I just figure a couple of years down the line I'll pick up a PS3 again at a garage sale or something, and then revisit those games if need be. The Future awaits....

This is odd to me.

I have so many PS3 games to get through, it's not even funny. And there's at least another dozen I want to get but haven't even bought yet. And I still have PS2 games I haven't played! My PS2 is still hooked up and I still play it! I would still have my PS1 hooked up if the PS2 wasn't fully B/C!

Here's the thing. For me, if I buy a brand new Xbox One, and a brand new PS4 , and then I walk by and see the PS3 sitting in the entertainment center, for some reason, it will bother me. It will eat at me. Hard to describe, but basically it just seems like I wouldn't really get the desire to play any PS3 games for a number of years. It will take a number of years for the "newness" of Xbox One and PS4 to wear off. Once that newness wears off, then I might get the feeling where I would want to play a PS3 game again, but that could be 2016 or 2017 before that happens.

When November 15th hits, I'm jumping all in on the PS4 and just have no need to continue to own a PS3. I will be playing DriveClub and Killzone and whatever else it is that I get. I won't have any interest in playing PS3 games. I'm also going to have an Xbone, so I'll be playing a few games on that. I also have my gaming PC, which is really where I have my primary backlog. Yeah, I did have a backlog on PS3, but the PC is where I really, really have a backlog.

Again, I will certainly own a PS3 again someday, but it will most likely be a case of finding one at a garage sale or a flea market or a thrift store for really cheap, and then maybe buying a few PS3 classic games that I would want to revisit. But I won't be thinking about any of this until at least 2016. I'll be too absorbed in the next-gen goodness.

I'm the same way, I don't see how you can play a PS3 when you've got a PS4 sitting right next to it. Once I move on to a next gen console my old consoles just collect dust, then eventually get sold.

I think you sold at the right time. I however need to keep my Ps3 until November to give me something to do. I sprang my foot pretty bad and I'm gonna be off of work for a few more weeks and my PS3 is the only thing keeping me sane right now. I might be able to get like $60 for it after the PS4 launches.

The couple of times I did revisit old consoles, it sucked. The graphics were lame, the controllers suck, and the experience is nowhere near as fun as it used to be. Once you've played the latest and greatest its hard to go back. The one exception I have is for the OG Nintendo, because of the Huge nostalgia factor.

It's the complete opposite for me, with my current backlog, upcoming AAA PS3 games and the fact that "true next gen" won't be here at launch and probably a year away, I actually have many more reasons to hold off getting a PS4.

Games are best enjoyed at their time IMO, for example I didn't play FFVII (still hoping for a remake that will never come lol), but I'm sure I won't enjoy it now as much as I would have if I had played it when it released on PS1.

Luckily for me I'm able to enjoy quality games from any era regardless of any prior experience with them.

My hang up is getting into games again that I've played before. I'm much more likely to play something new to me from an earlier generation than I am to replay something I played through to completion years earlier (with the exception of arcade style experiences). When there's unplayed games to play I guess I have a hard time justifying spending time replaying something.

Since it's all but impossible for me to ever have played every game worth playing from this console generation, all three consoles have secure futures with me. Especially the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 that hardly are showing signs of their age as far as I'm concerned. I see quality games coming on the PS4 & XBOne but the technological step forward so far has been underwhelming. Everything I've seen looks easily possible with just slight downgrades on the current gen consoles.

The best of the best in the area of graphics on current gen gaming hardware like The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto V are very competitive based by what I've seen so far. If a nice looking launch PS4/XBOne game that was unknown was compared to an also unknown project on the level of The Last of Us running on the PS3 with next gen console buyers left to select based on merit alone which was running on the next gen gaming console, I don't think it would be a landslide victory for the next gen console.

A bit of time will make the PS3 look outdated but I don't think it's going to happen this Fall...

Anyone watching the stream? These translators have been pure comedy gold!
So far nothing good on the PS4. Sega CEO has quite the haircut! The Sega samurai game Ishin or whatever doesn't look all that good, though they didn't show gameplay. Dynasty Warriors looks horrible as they always do.

The Pyscho game looks like it could be pretty good.

Lily Bergamo dude has an awesome suit with dual scarf going on.

Deep Down new info...

New trailer with playable footage.

Modern tech meets fantasy? Animus style? Based in New York 2094? Translator sucks.

The dragon and flames looks pretty close to the reveal, but this feed is crap. They are playing it now, knight in armor with a spear. Random maps, gameplay looks sluggish random monster designs...

It looks nothing like Dogma, which is a let down.

Wow, Deep Down looks amazing!! Far better than expected.

Didn't care for most of the stuff prior to it.

At least we know that the reveal wasn't a bull trailer. I really need to see more classes, that spear looked really clunky.

Glad they showed that live game play now I can't wait to see some direct feed gameplay. Sounded like it could possibly be exclusive, but not sure.

If that lets us play Vita games and PSP games on our big screens I'll be pretty happy. Though, not sure why they can't just offer PSP/Vita games as downloadable games to work on the PS3 and PS4.
