So I ordered the "Xrite EODIS3 i1Display Pro" bundle, anyone have any pointers for a noob?

I've little to no experience calibrating with a meter. I've seen it done before a long time ago though.

I guess I just want to ask if anyone has any pointers for someone trying this for the first time, especially with the particular meter and software I ordered.

None of my displays are very top of the line, a Dell U2412M, a Panasonic UT50, and a Optoma HD20 projector are what I have.

When I first got my Dell U2412M I applied the ICC profile for it from TFTCentral and had a friend who was in town for a very brief period of time check it with his meter and tweaked it slightly, and I've been using it as a reference point for adjusting my other displays. I'm very curious to see how close or how incredibly off I managed to get things using this method.

I've seen people mention that using a PC to generate the patterns might not be the best way, but I'm guessing it will be good enough for my amateur experiments? Anything else I need?

I believe that the software that comes with the standard i1Display Pro will only calibrate computer monitors. It must be running on the computer that is connected to the monitor. As such I have found the software does it's job and is easy to use. However if you want to calibrate a TV or vieo projector, you must use different software. I use the Color HCFR software found in a different thread in this forum. To generate the patterns for my TV I used the AVS HD 701 disc.

Pretty sure this is the "PRO" version. And it says it will do projectors.

I recommend Calman to do your plasma, second choice would be HCFR

It will as long as the projector is displaying content from a PC.

Why won't Xrite's software be good for that in particular?

Well it does half the time, other times I use it for console video games.

Calman and hcfr have plasma correction tables i doubt the xrite software does

Calman has custom workflows that make getting a good cal easier

I think what they are saying is that the calman/hcfr/etc software expands on its functionality right? Since you can use an oppo bd player to output patterns from disc and read with the software.
Since I am also a beginner looking for my 1st meter to play with I was wondering which x-rite i1pro is a spectrophotometer? I looked it up and it has a few models like EODIS3 EOPROF etc. and I was told to get a specto not colorimeter if I could

Greetings

The Display 3 is a colorimeter, not a spectro. Number of choices dwindling. smile.gif

First of all... Thanks for all of the replies.

I'm having trouble finding those plasma correction matrix files.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Actually... X-Rite now has "plasma" as a selection.

I'm also laughing pretty hard right now, because my RGB drive/cut settings I made by eye aren't that far off apparently?

On the X-Rite White Point adjustment... the readings keep changing... kind of annoying... but... they are averaging right around 6500k!! (These are RGB Drive/Cut settings I did by EYE the other week, no colorimeter!).

For the "White point adjustment", it says my Reds are slightly high, greens ever so slightly low.... and blue ever so slightly high. How does this relate to drive/cut? Once it a while it gets a reading that claims my reds and greens are perfect though, but usually not... usually it's R slightly high, G slightly low, and B slightly high.

Most of the time I get readings of like 6511K, 6580K, 6480K, 6660K.. etc... but sometimes they bounce way high to like 7100K... Also since it's making the entire screen white instead of a small square... is the ABL going to be screwing up the calibration?

Edit: still need the plasma matrix file for HCFR, because iProfile uses the entire screen instead of a small window and the ABL is causing serious issues as a result.
Edit2: I took a sample of my greyscale in HCFR with no correction matrix, and my deltaE's are ranging from like 9.7 to 12. Not bad for my by eye calibration. I haven't attempted to calibrate it beyond what I did the other week by eye, because of the ABL issue in iProfiler and I'm still learning how to use HCFR.

I finally did my first calibration.

See here for the results: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1412033/the-official-panasonic-ut50-settings-issues-thread/930#post_23046594

I did not use any plasma correction matrix at all... do I really need to with my i1 display pro? And if so, can someone please provide one for an i1 display pro?
