I have a very large..no huge Rear projection TV that is having trouble. It will start, the picture and sound is fine, then after a while it will stop. It seems to be a heat related problem since once it has been turned of for a while it will restart. I have trolled the forums and service manual sites with little success. If anybody has any suggestions for repair, servicman or, failing that, would like to recylce the TV I am open to suggestions.

I had nothing to lose so I took the back off the unit to have a look. A quick inspection showed the fan cooling the circuit board (?) was clogged with dust and not working. I cleaning off all the gunk and wallah! the fan started working. This fans seems to have stopped the overheating and the TV is working well again.

The LG 71SA1D has 3 fans. 1/ the driver card the little 50mm fan that was blocked in your case, 2/ the lamp fan and 3/ the light engine fan located in the front of the chassis. If either fan fails or is clogged the fan does not send a pulse back to the Tuner board yes the Tuner board and the TV will shut down in 5 seconds with a over heating LED flashing at you. I have seen these fans clogged to a point that somehow they still work but do not do what they were designed for. I have had a lot to do with these TV's and I can tell you this that most that have killed the Light Engine have done it because of over heating problems caused because of two reasons.
1/ the main filter (about 40x60mm) located on the right hand side of that little 50mm fan held in by two 3mm screws going to the main mirror chamber is clogged to the point of no circulation of air.
2/ These tv's sold WITHOUT there correct sitting cabinet that was designed for the 71 SA1D which allow a huge amount of air to enter the TV via the bottom of the tv and escape from the rear. without this cabinet you will over heat the TV if you sit the TV on a flat table type of a TV cabinet.

I don't know were you are located but if your TV has done over 15,000 hours (check lamp timer)I would be replacing all the fans and buying or repairing your own filter as the filter material on these TV's after a few years has a habit of falling apart. Here in OZ I go to Crazy Clark's and buy a piece of 7mm x one foot square air con filter material, I cut it out to suit this filter and glue it with an adhesive salastic. One of my 71SA1D's TV's has done over 50,000 hours and get fully stripped like the other and cleaned every two years. I also have replaced most of the Capacitors in the SMPSupply and totally re-soldered the SMPS board.
