Help with TV feature name and if it even exists?

It looks like Sonos is coming out with a Sonos Playbar. This allows you to hook your TV's OPTICAL out directly into it and skip the need for a receiver basically.

Now I know my current 4 year old Panasonic Plasma will only pass the OTA 5.1 audio source through the Optical out and not pass through other HDMI signal sources.

That being said do any current TV's pass through the HDMI audio? And if so what is this feature called to look for on a new set?

I hope this makes sense as I don't know exactly what this ability is called.

Thanks.

Most newer tv's pass audio over HDMI through ARC (Audio Return Channel.) Meaning, audio gets sent from the tv via one of its HDMI inputs to the HDMI output of your receiver. For ARC to work you need a compatible receiver. Sonos' Playbar does not have any HDMI ports and, therefore, no ARC capability.

Most tv's WILL passthrough audio from hdmi to the optical port, however, it's usually only 2 channel stereo.
