Returning URC R40, Now what....?!?!?

Have a URC R40 that I am returning because of the bug they have with the "disappearing" keys (see URC R40 thread for comments). Now looking for what to get............

This is to replace a Logitech 550 that has been good over the years but keys starting to stick quite regularly.

1) Looking to spend around $150

2) Five devices

3) Able to run Macros/Activities

4) Hard buttons a must, don't want Touchscreen. Though an LCD with buttons is fine.

5) Can be programmed by myself, either manually or from the computer

6) Since Logitech is trying to dissolve its remote business, not sure that I want to buy something that may become obsolete......

I've been using a URC MX-700 for a decade or more. Even have a back-up I got off Ebay a couple years ago. Never liked the touchscreen remotes and the Harmonys never tripped my trigger. The MX-700 can be hard to find since it's discontinued, but well worth it if you can find one.

A refurbished Harmony 700 can be had from eBay for $60 shipped. It will accommodate your 5 devices and has a rechargeable battery. I use one. I like it except one of the buttons on mine is starting to respond intermittently after 3 years of hard use. I used to use a URC 500 MX but got tired of the back light failing. There are no perfect remotes.

I'd look for a URX MX-880. They'll pop up on ebay occasionally for 150-200. Best remote I've ever owned (Logitech Harmony 880, One, 700 and URC mx-450)

Anymore suggestions.........

Looking for something new or "open box". Too many issues with remotes (keys, etc.) to not have a warranty. Would rather have normal batteries (I can use re-chargeables), don't want a re-charge cradle for the remote.

:Lowest I found the MX-880 was 299, but no software.

If you are having issues finding a dealer in your area that will offer the software try surfremote.com. They are a URC authorized dealer and I believe will give you the software with the remote on request. Only authorized dealers are allowed to distribute the software. The MX-780 maybe the best model for you when it comes to buying new with a warranty and keeping as close to your budget as possible. They do not show their prices on the web so you will have to call them. URC does have an exchange policy where if your remote is out of warranty and not functional you can pay a set fee to exchange it for a new one.

I just read in the other thread that the bug is fixed. You can replace it with a new one with updated firmware version 1.19 - just contact URC with your serial number.

I have the Harmony 550 in another system and I hate it. Hate the 650 too, feels like a kids remote.

The R40 with updated firmware or an MX-450 purchased from EBAY would be the remotes that work for you application. The advantage of the MX-450 is that it has an archiver program that can be used to update the the remote with new device codes in the future. The 450 can be used with an RF base station as well. You can also save your existing remote configuration to your computer. I own (2) MX-450s and (2) R50s. My second Mx-450 was purchased new on Ebay for $120. The programming methodology is the same as the R40. I just purchased a new R40 as well on ebay for $90.
