Streaming Movies from Laptop to Receiver

Quick question on playing movies from my Laptop to my Denon. Real quick..
Macbook Air Laptop Booted into Windows (Bootcamp)

I have an HDMI cable going from Laptop to the Media Player HDMI on the Denon Receiver.

Video shows, and there is sound.

Here is the issue:
I was playing a movie with VLC Media Player (made sure that 5.1 sound was checked) and the movie would only use 3.1 sound. My two bookshelf speakers would not play anything.

Also the resolution is off, I played around in the options but nothing that took care of it.

When I play the laptop straight to the TV the resolution is fine. (but we need to use surround sound)

How to get 5.1 sound from laptop to Receiver, and how to optimize the resolution to show properly since going through the receiver?

Try posting in the HTPC section. The people there might be of use to you.

Are you closing the laptop screen when playing the films? Or do you have the TV set as the monitor when you play the films?

What does the front panel display on the AVR? In most cases there's an errant setting on the source causing the problem.
