A400 or Mede8ter

I am looking to replace a Seagate freeagent +. I have all of my movies on an external HD that connect to my Freeagent. I watch 3d and 2d on my projector. I utilize mostly mkv rips and the ocassional avi/mpeg. I would like to network this with my upstairs main desktop simply to be able to rip and move the movies over to the new machine with out having to unplug the HD and take it up and down stairs. I love the thought of a jukebox type setup. When I have read on both machines the 3d movies and larger mkv seem to have issues. In time I may need to add an extra drive but I do not plan to stream from my upstairs PC to actually watch the movies. I do not use ISO files nor direct rip (aka 30 gig type files) everything is in the 4-15 GB range. If you have any recommendations aside from this I am open.

Mede8er:

Manual JukeBox only

A400:
"Built in" JukeBox
Manual JukeBox

It allr eally depends on how you want to manage your media. Many on the forums manage their media externally so devices like the Mede8er are much easier to integrate into thier current set ups.

The mede8er is more stable, but the a400 is getting better with each firmware, but still has a ways to match the stability of the Mede8er....The bonus is that the Mede8er has had a longer time on market to fix these errors and get to where it is currently. Thier support is top notch and they come out with firmware fixes frequently.....A400 have been doing a good job with udates and trying to fix the major issues, there are stilla few major bugs out there, but for your files you may not see much headache since you are not dealing with ISO or very large files....

Also to add A400 has a homegrown external browser\remote app which lets you browse your media and select what to play on a tablet device.....I hear Mede8er is alos possibly getting this via a 3rd party app as well.....

Int he end either would probably be a good choice for you. Its up to you decide if you want to deal with the bugs that could possibly arise on the A400 while they get it stable or if you want to manually manage your media and have a more stable media player...

Do you see an advantage of one over the other related to
1. 3d mkv
2. internal versus external HDD
3. or the jukeboxes.

my files are set up in folders now but no metadata. I keep looking at both and seems a big circle. I also saw the Dune 3d coming out but see issues with 3d mkv at this point. My initial gut was the popcorn hour as the juke box looked nicer but the ease is the big one. I don't see me doing an external HTPC in the future.

You need to understand which type of 3d mkv you are talking about. there is SBS 3d which every player plays fine this is what most people have. then there is MVC inside mkv these can only be made using makemkv and at the moment only mede8er supports it. both PCH and dune have said they will look into mvc/mkv support.

Internal versus external no difference.

Jukeboxes can make or break a product as much as having playback issues. The mede8er movie jukebox is fine but there is no jukebox for tv shows and I dont think there is a music one. PCH is only box right now that has its own internal jukebox that does all the scanning and things for you, its not a perfect solution but works for both, Then there is things like yamj that can also run with the PCH, Dune has zappitti that most run.

That is a great point and in looking at my files they look to be SBS. Thanks for the help and clarification.

Do you feel the Apps for either machine make or break it. My current setup gives me access to play pandora, which I use a lot. Also does either machine have an issue blending and internal and extrnal drive into one seamless unified jukebox setup. In short when I see the jukebox will all the movies/music etc be listed from both drives or will I have to go to two locations?

Lastly do you see any issues connecting either machine via ethernet cable to my upstairs desktop to move files on and off. With my freeagent it was just a player and not seen by my upstairs machine as a location to move files to (networked). The abaility to move a file I created or obtained on my main desktop to the machine in the theater on either the external or internal drive is key for me.

For the One JukeBox there are soultions for the A400, but it is not native as of yet....

For the Mede8er I believe since it is manually managed you can combine locations, but I am not 100% on this....

As far as Apps go neither exceles at them, you would need another device (ala ROku) to get that. There are only a small select few none of which are currently in production (so all you will get is left overstock\used)

Both players ahve the ability to share over your network so that you can move files from your PC to the devices internal or an externally attached HDD....
